Penguins acquire G Mattias Modig from Anaheim, agree to 2-year entry level contract

Yeah, this won’t create any offseason chatter. From the Penguins:
The Pittsburgh Penguins agreed to terms with Mattias Modig to a two-year entry level contract after acquiring the goaltender from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a 2010 sixth-round draft pick, it was announced by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Modig, 23, played the last four seasons with his hometown team Lulea HF of the Swedish Elite League. He has carried the bulk of the netminding duties in the last two years, playing 74 games and posting a 2.35 goals-against average with a .913 save percentage and six shutouts. The 6-foot, 163-pound goaltender was originally drafted by Anaheim in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
The Penguins traded a sixth-round pick to Anaheim, which was obtained from Montreal. Pittsburgh now has seven draft picks remaining in 2010 with a first-, third-, fourth-, fifth-, two sixth- and a seventh-round selection.

Penguins trade defenseman Peluso to Toronto for 2010 6th round pick

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired a 2010 sixth-round draft pick from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Chris Peluso, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Peluso, 23, is currently playing collegiately for Bemidji State of College Hockey America. The senior defenseman has seven assists and a plus-4 rating in 24 games. Peluso was originally drafted by the Penguins in the seventh round (194th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
The Penguins now have eight draft picks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft with a first-, third-, fourth-, fifth-, three sixth- and a seventh-round selection.

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie’s Tweet:
Sources tell TSN deal in place for Ponikarovsky to Pittsburgh for prospect Luca Caputi but Pitt has to move contract for cap reasons first.
UPDATE 9:49pm: Again per Bob McKenzie:
Pending trade call with NHL, Pitt is sending Luca Caputi and Martin Skoula to Tor for Alex Ponikarovsky. No draft picks involved.

Jordan Leopold to Penguins for 2010 2nd round pick

According to On Frozen Pond Twitter, the Florida Panthers have traded defenseman Jordan Leopold to the Penguins for a 2010 2nd round draft pick.

Oh by the way, trade deadline is one week away

Like everyone else, I’ve been consumed with the Olympic hockey. The Canada/Russia game tonight should be, shall I say, intense. And I hope the USA doesn’t take their collective feet off the throttle in today’s rematch vs. Switzerland.
But while the tournament has so far lived up to it’s billing, it has overshadowed the trade deadline, which is one week from today.
In what may very well be known to the Penguins as the “rental player deadline”, speculation is that GMRS will attempt to trade for a winger and a defensive defenseman. How he will go about that, as well as what he’ll have to give up in order to get those assets, is anybody’s guess.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Steve Wagner from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Nate Guenin, it was announced by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero. Wagner, who will be reporting to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, spent the last three-plus seasons in the St. Louis organization after signing as a free agent in 2007. He has appeared in 46 career NHL games for the Blues, posting four goals and 12 points. Wagner, 25, has played extensively in Peoria of the AHL – St. Louis’ top minor-league affiliate. In 130 games with the Rivermen, the Grand Rapids, Minnesota native has compiled 15 goals, 37 assists and 52 points.
Wagner (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) played three collegiate seasons at Minnesota State – Mankato from 2004-07. In 113 contests as a Maverick, he posted 12 goals and 55 points. Wagner also played with Tri-City of the United States Hockey League for two seasons. He helped the Storm capture the Anderson Cup (league regular-season championship) and finish second in the Clark Cup (postseason championship) in 2004.

Just a quick note to Penguins fans on what’ll go down tomorrow here;
After tonight’s Pens/Lightning recap, the only thing you’ll see from me on Wednesday is actual trade annoucements, no rumors. Paul, Alanah and the rest of us scrubs are making a big effort to keep the posting down to the bare essentials. Obviously, the site is gonna be swapped with traffic, as well as those who just have to hit F5 every 15 seconds.
This’ll be my first Trade Deadline go-round here at KK, but based on past years, you don’t need me to tell you that you won’t go wrong having us as one of your main sites for breaking trades.

Ryan Whitney to Ducks for Kunitz and Eric Tangradi

As Paul just mentioned, the Penguins made what has to be regarded as a significant trade today, trading offensive defenseman Ryan Whitney to the Anaheim Ducks for wingers Chris Kunitz and Eric Tangradi.
I’ll have more on this within the next couple of hours after I take care of some personal business.

Penguins close to blockbuster trade ??

UPDATE 9:40 ET: Add the Denver Post onto this chain.
Well, it is getting close to that time, isn’t it.
TheFourthPeriod.com reports that the Colorado Avalanche may be close to a multi-player trade, with the Bruins and Penguins rumored as possible trading partners.
TFP mentions that the Pens are interested in winger Milan Hejduk and may be willing to part with either Ryan Whitney or Jordan Staal as part of the deal.
Now, if that’s not enough, we also have a very unconfirmed, but very interesting and possibly very related post on one of the main Penguins message boards tonight.

Penguins Trade Deadline - T minus 19

As you can imagine, Kukla’s Korner will be all over the upcoming trade deadline. Paul will be burning up the phone lines, while the rest of us will do our best to get the latest trade news to ya.
In reference to the Penguins, what I plan on doing will be perusing the various hockey websites and will provide links to the various credible rumors, as well as of course letting you know when Penguins’ deals have gone down. Just to let ya know, I don’t pretend to be an insider by any means, so just keep that in mind. I’ll also throw my .02 in the rumor, so whatever the hell that’s worth.
I’ll try to throw something up here on a daily basis, if there are new rumors floating out there.
So as we’re now under three weeks away from the deadline, here’s the latest rumors;
