Penguins recall Tangradi: Don’t Ask Me

UPDATE: From the Penguins:
The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled left wing Eric Tangradi from Wheeling of the ECHL, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Tangradi recorded two assists and a plus-2 rating in five preseason games with Pittsburgh.

Penguins place Craig, Hutchinson on Waivers

Per TSN’s Bob McKenzie’s Tweet, The Penguins placed Ryan Craig and Andrew Hutchinson on waivers today.
It appears, for now at least, that defensemen Ben Lovejoy and Deryk Engelland, as well as forwards Mark Letestu and Eric Tangradi will be on the opening day roster.
Still not known what will be done with defenseman Simon Despres.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have assigned forward Dustin Jeffrey to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The transaction leaves 29 players on the Penguins’ roster: 17 forwards; 10 defensemen; and two goaltenders.

Penguins Reduce Roster by 11, Down to 30 Players

The Pittsburgh Penguins reduced their training camp roster by 11 players, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Forwards Chris Conner, Nick Johnson, Brett Sterling, Joe Vitale and Tim Wallace, defensemen Robert Bortuzzo, Corey Potter, Brian Strait and Steve Wagner and goaltenders John Curry and Brad Thiessen were assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Conner, Curry, Potter, Sterling, Wagner and Wallace will have to clear waivers by Thursday at noon before joining WBS.
The transaction leaves 30 players on the Penguins’ roster: 18 forwards; 10 defensemen; and two goaltenders.

Penguins Cut Fifteen from Camp Roster

The Pittsburgh Penguins reduced their training camp roster by 15, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Thirteen players were assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Two were returned to their junior teams.
Joining Wilkes-Barre/Scranton are forwards Jesse Boulerice, Chris Collins, Joey Haddad, Nick Petersen, Ryan Schnell, Zack Sill, Alex Smigelski, Keven Veilleux and Geoff Walker, defensemen Jason DeSantis, Derek Peltier and Carl Sneep and goaltender Patrick Killeen.
Forward Tyler Brown (Plymouth, Ontario Hockey League) and goaltender Alex Pechurskiy (Tri-City, Western Hockey League) were returned to their respective junior teams.

Penguins Host Red Wings in First Hockey Game at New Arena Wednesday at 7PM

The Penguins will host the Detroit Red Wings in their pre-season opener Wednesday night at 7 p.m. – the first hockey game ever played at CONSOL Energy Center.
Gates will open at 5:30 p.m.
The American Eagle Outfitters Student Rush line will form along Fifth Avenue.
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Brooks Orpik are among the players scheduled to be in the opening lineup for the Penguins.

Penguins sign Ryan Bayda to one-year contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Ryan Bayda to a one-year contract, it was announced by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Bayda, who attended the Penguins’ 2009 training camp on a professional tryout, earned a two-way contract from the club. The 5-11, 195-pound winger played parts of five seasons with Carolina after the Hurricanes drafted him with the 80th overall pick (third round) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
Bayda, 28, has tallied 40 points (16G-24A) in 179 career games. Last season, he posted 12 points (5G-7A) in 70 games and four points (2G-2A) in 15 post-season contests, which included four games against the Penguins in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Saskatoon, Canada native played three collegiate seasons at the University of North Dakota.

Penguins Preseason Roundtable: Part IV - Defending the Cup

Well, for this last one, the roundtable is down to one. Everyone’s pretty busy with the start of the season looming and, God forbid, the rest of their lives, so I’m taking this one solo.
So we’ve looked at the Offense in Part I, the Defense in Part II and Special Teams in Part III. Now for the final part, we look at the most important part, that being Defending the Cup.
It’s been a long time coming, friends.

Penguins make roster cuts, including Tangradi, Caputi

The Pittsburgh Penguins have trimmed their training camp roster to 28 players, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.
Thirteen players have been assigned to the club’s top minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). They are forwards Wade Brookbank, Luca Caputi, Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson, Konstantin Pushkarev, Wyatt Smith, Eric Tangradi, Joe Vitale and Tim Wallace, defensemen Robert Bortuzzo, Jonathan D’Aversa and Chris Lee and goaltender Brad Thiessen.
The Penguins have re-assigned 2009 first-round pick Simon Despres to Saint John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The moves leave the Penguins with 16 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders remaining in training camp.
Pittsburgh has until Sept. 30 to reduce its roster to 23 players before heading into the regular season.

Goligoski with hat trick in Penguins’ Black/Gold scrimmage

The Penguins held their Black/Gold scrimmage in front of a sold-out crowd at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s Wachovia Arena last night. Defenseman Alex Goligoski scored all three goals for Team Black, that included Sidney Crosby, Jordan Staal and Sergei Gonchar. Luca Caputi and new Penguin Mike Rupp scored for Team Gold (although their jerseys were white), that also included Evgeni Malkin, Bill Guerin and new Penguin Jay McKee.
The Penguins play Toronto tonight at the Igloo.
