Another FAIL for the NHL on Trade Deadline Day

Just thought I’d jump on the soapbox real quick.  For as big of a deal that the NHL makes the Trade Deadline out to be you’d think they’d put some more effort into it.

While Canadian networks TSN and Sportsnet were wall-to-wall deadline coverage, what coverage did us scrubs in the US get ??  Frickin’ reruns of On The Fly on the NHL Network until noon, when they started their deadline special of NHL Live.  Thank goodness for TSN’s streaming feed of it’s coverage, which started at 8AM ET Wednesday.  And in all honesty, I was a little surprised TSN had that, there have been times that TSN has blocked streaming from us Yankees.  Anyway, I realize that the first trade didn’t go down until around 10-ish, but to not have anything on, specifically to multicast the TSN feed, like they do for the NHL Entry Draft coverage, is just unsatisfactory.  But unfortunately, it’s not surprising.

Also, while I’m up here, let me also say how disappointed I was in the extreme latency in the NHL Text Alerts during the day.  I understand that they probably waited until the trades were official, but I got some text 2.5, sometimes 3 hours late.

Let’s hope they have a big “lessons learned” meeting at NHL HQ soon.

Haha, good call Tony.  I noticed the text alerts coming extremely late as well.  When it comes to things the NHL does well, the list is short, Winter Classic and Playoffs included.

Yeah, the text alerts bothered me too.  Basically useless.  I wonder if TSN’s alerting was any better…

To be fair, I believe the NHL text alerts did not go out until they were approved by the NHL office.

Other media sources could send them out as soon as they heard about them but the NHL did not want to send out trades until they were official.

Yeah, that’s what I thought Paul…

TheTick, TSN only sent the text alerts to Canadian carriers….

I used a friend’s slingbox and it was amazing.  The texts from the NHL never arrived…Not a single one.  The texts from TSN where 3 minutes behind the tv.  The big winner of the day was by far twitter.  It was amazing to see the world watch the deadline on twitter and #nhltrade you can follow me at @yyzsportsmedia.com

Have to agree with you about the coverage. I wonder if TSN did something to them. Last year during the deadline they streamed TSN. This year nothing??

Oh well,

My Blue Jackets got some help, so I’m happy with the trades that we made.

Wait, you mean the NHL front offices mishandled a public relations situation and made themselves look amateurish and generally second class?

Great post, Tony, you really nailed it.

Except I’m left wondering if your computer has at least partial “Canadian content?” I was blocked form both the TSN and Sportsnet video feeds here in Saginaw, MI. But at least I was able to follow the TSN trade tracker (without audio). I kept bouncing back and forth between that, KK, the TSN and ESPN live blogs, and finally—after noon—NHL Live. Maybe I need to get on the Twitter bandwagon, but I’m just an unfrozen caveman hockey fan and, frankly, all of your technology frightens me! smile

I doubt it YZ, in fact I refreshed my TSN feed 4 or 5 times ‘cause the trade tracker wasn’t updating….

Thank you! And I totally agree. I was so disappointed when I found out that NHL Network wouldn’t be showing TSN’s coverage. The wrap-up show that started at 3 was terrible. All these trades kept coming in but instead of telling us they just stuck them in the news crawl while Gary Green & co. continued to go on & on about the trades that had already taken place. Awful!  I’m already dreading an announcement saying they’re doing their own coverage of the draft. Ugh!

I could not agree more.  They were probably hoping to prop up the NHL Live show on TV, but honestly, they cannot hope to put out a comparable product using a call-in radio show…and for only 3 hours to boot.

Is there any way we can lobby NHL Network to show the TSN feed next year?  I’ve been looking for contact info to send my feedback and cannot find any.
