Here’s your Penguins trade:  T.J. Kemp to Montreal for 2010 7th round pick

From the Penguins:

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS TRADE T.J. KEMP TO MONTREAL IN EXCHANGE FOR CONDITIONAL 2010 DRAFT PICK

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded defenseman T.J. Kemp to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a conditional seventh round draft pick in the 2010 Entry Draft, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Kemp, 27, has played 22 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season.  He has posted nine points (one goal, eight assists) along with 22 penalty minutes.

The 5-11, 197-pound defenseman has split the past four seasons between the Peoria Rivermen, Iowa Stars, Milwaukee Admirals, Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Manchester Monarchs, Springfield Falcons and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.  Kemp has appeared in 174 career games in the AHL, registering 93 points (14 goals, 79 assists) and 126 penalty minutes.

The native of Pickering, Ontario signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent on July 8, 2008.

Don’t think its quite what Pens fans were hoping for, but whatever. Looks like Shero is trying to trade some of our perennial AHLers away for picks with this and the Filewich trade, and I’m cool with that. The more picks we have each year the better, even if its a ton of late rounders. Always a chance you’ll get someone great or a suprise player out of the late rounds.

IMHO Gainey may have made this move to shore up his depth in Hamilton, because the Habs are calling up more and more players due to injuries.

There are a number of rumours floating around the blogosphere about the Penguins talking trade, the latest being a Pens-Preds deal including JP Dumont.

Ray Shero is in a tough spot. The Penguins lost Hossa, Malone, Christensen, Roberts, Laraque, Conklin and Ruutu to free agency; this year, Gonchar and Whitney to injury.

He still has no cap space this year, so any trade he wants to make is difficult.

All of this has to hurt the Penguins, and they do look like a frustrated team.

Welcome to The Confluence, a Pittsburgh Penguins blog since 2006.  Originally at Blogspot, then at MVN, The Confluence has over 1000 articles reporting Penguins news as well as jumping on my soapbox to opine constructive Penguins criticism.  My posts are regularly linked by hockey websites such as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Empty Netters and Yahoo!’s Puck Daddy, and I’ve done guest blogger spots on such websites as the New York Times.  I invite you to spend a little time and peruse the archives at all of the sites for some of my better work.  I am a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, but don’t confuse me with my fellow Chief at A2Y.
