If you’re Ray Shero, how many tweaks do you make to the Penguins’ roster?

NHL Eastern Conference Practices

Shazam!  Congratulations, you’re now Penguins’ GM Ray Shero.  Your Stanley Cup defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins find themselves in a fairly comfortable playoff position with 24 games remaining but have been quite inconsistent, going a mediocre 23-19-1 after starting the season with a 12-3 record.

So with that under your belt, just how many tweaks, if any, do you make Ray?

There are those that will say that the “core” of the Penguins is still intact and they can defend their championship with basically the roster they have now.  In my view, sorry to say I do not see that happening.  I do not think this team, as it’s currently constructed, will win the Stanley Cup.  I believe, again in it’s current version, that their defensive liabilities and lack of winger scoring could end up being their downfall.  By the way, in case you’re wondering, out of the 23 players that were on the roster when the Penguins hoisted the Cup in Detroit on June 12th, 17 remain (not counting the five that were callups from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton but didn’t play).

So Ray, if you’re like me, and feel you definitely need some tweaks (note: plural) as the Penguins head towards the playoffs, how many will you make and what will those be?

Well, before you answer that, you’d better be ready to answer these questions first;

What are your future plans for your UFA’s, and will you consider trading for an UFA at season’s end?  Or would you prefer a player that you can retain longer?  Are you willing to trade away high draft picks?  Will you have to make a roster move, or moves, in order to make a trade because of the salary cap?  Will any trade partner accept any trades involving an unproductive player?  Are you willing to trade away an asset because you’re comfortable with his future replacement at Wilkes/Barre-Scranton?

No problem, right?

Personally, I think GMRS will definitely make at least a couple of moves.  He’s said recently that he would prefer to wait until after the Olympic trading freeze and wait until the deadline, but I’m not so sure.

Good luck, Ray.
