Next entry: Penguins announce special “opening events” at new arena

Previous entry: 2011 Winter Classic Press Release

Lemieux, Crosby are First to Skate at Consol Energy Center

From the Penguins:

One of the most important “firsts” in the history of CONSOL Energy Center took place today – Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby were the first to skate on the ice at Pittsburgh’s sparkling new arena.

The Penguins’ owner and captain came out of different doors on the Penguins’ bench so that their skates actually touched the ice at the same time.

Video of the special moment is available at http://www.pittsburghpenguins.com

“That was pretty special,” said Crosby, who saw the inside of the new arena for the first time. “There are going to be a ton of things that happen here, so to go out there and be the first ones on the ice,  that was special. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to skate with Mario.”

Lemieux and Crosby skated on the rink for about five minutes before they were joined by a group of youngsters wearing – you guessed it – Lemieux and Crosby jerseys.

“It felt great to be able to skate for the first time with Sid and then have all the kids here,” Lemieux said. “I think it was pretty special for all of us. It was a long time coming. We worked hard to get this accomplished. I’m glad we were able to do this today.”

It’s cool, but why is it an “important first”?  What is important about who is the first to skate on it?

Perhaps even the thing depicted on your avatar.

It’s funny, because if someone said something like this in A2Y, it would be look at the trolls!  Get out of here trolls!  They just can’t help themselves!  Yet here they are, adding absolutely nothing.

Glad to see the kids with Lemieux and Crosby.  Very awesome.  Can’t wait for this place to open.

That’s pretty cool.  You could tell that they were both pretty excited about it.

Put it this way…if Detroit was opening a new arena, wouldn’t you want the first person that skated on the new ice to be of some kind of significance?  Like…possibly…a certain #19 that may have suited up in the red and white winged wheel jersey adorned with a “C” for 20+ seasons?  Especially if that same dude was the driving force behind keeping your favorite franchise in town and getting a desperately needed new arena built.

It might not be all that important to you, but to those of us who have lived through all the drama and uncertainty seeing Mario lace ‘em up and take the ice before anyone else in the arena that he built is a pretty satisfying sight…at least for me it is.

so I’m not going to comment on this.

Whew…thank God you didn’t comment!

Satisfying, sure.  Cool?  Definitely.  But important?

I mean, obviously Pens fans wouldn’t want a player from another team to be first, but why is it important that it’s Lemieux rather than, like, school children or season tickets holders or whatever.

I just think it’s odd that it’s considered important.

I’m not taking issue with them being the first, at all, I just think it’s odd wording.

why is it important that it’s Lemieux

It’s a weird thing.  Because, I definitely see where you’re coming from.  Important might not be the best word for it.  Satisfying and deserving are probably way more suited for this situation.

But, then again, I can’t bring myself to say that it isn’t important that he was the first one to step foot on the ice.  The man did everything in his power to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh.  All Penguins fans are eternally indebted to him for that.

And, if it was me who was in charge of who did get to step out onto the CEC ice first, it would certainly be important to me that Mario get the first chance to do so.

I don’t know how else to explain it, dude.  Haha.

I think I can buy that.  I get that it’s satisfying and I suppose, symbolically, it IS important to have like, good vibes or whatever involved.

You’ve convinced me.
