Malkin’s OT goal gives Penguins 3-2 win over Panthers

It was bound to happen sooner or later. The question is, am I referring simply to a powerplay goal or an Evgeni Malkin powerplay goal ?
Turned out it was both, as Malkin scored on a 4-on-3 powerplay in overtime to give the Penguins a 3-2 win over the visiting Florida Panthers.
The Pens got some much-needed scoring from their wingers as well, with Pascal Dupuis and Ruslan Fedotenko scoring in regulation for the Pens. Steven Reinprecht and Stephen Weiss tallied for the Panthers.
The Penguins allowed the first goal again tonight, when on the powerplay the Panthers’ Rostislav Olesz got a centering feed and backhanded a shot on net that Pens’ backup goalie Brent Johnson stopped, as the puck rebounded into the air. Olesz attempted to bat the puck in unsuccessfully, but Reinprecht was able to bat the puck into the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the 10:25 mark of the first period.
The Pens knotted the game up at one goal apiece a few minutes later, as Dupuis took advantage of Panthers’ defenseman Dmitry Kulikov falling down, allowing Dupuis to skate in towards Panthers’ goalie Tomas Vokoun. Dupuis fired a hard wrister past Vokoun to make it 1-1 at 13:03.
Mike Rupp was a major contributor to the Penguins’ next goal, as midway through the second period Rupp took two Panthers out of the play on the forecheck, allowing Malkin to grab the loose puck and fire a nice centering pass to Fedotenko for an easy tap-in goal past Vokoun and a 2-1 Pens’ lead. It was Fedotenko’s first goal in 14 games.
But the Panthers came back in the third period and capitalized on their killing of a penalty, as they blocked a Sergei Gonchar shot as the penalty expired. Bryan McCabe came out of the box, took a pass and came in on Johnson on a breakaway. Johnson was able to stop McCabe’s five-hole attempt, but Weiss was able to corral the loose puck away from an attempted poke check from Johnson. Weiss then dragged the puck around Johnson and fired the easy wrister into the open net to knot the game at 2-2.
It remained that way until overtime, when Jordon Leopold was called for holding on a Jordan Staal drive to the net at the 30 second mark. It only took seven seconds after that, as Malkin took Gonchar’s pass and fired a slapper from the right point past Vokoun for the game-winner.

- Sorry about the lack of posts the last couple of days. Between the Steelers, work and my son’s wisdom teeth, been a busy time.
Chris Kunitz came back to the lineup tonight, marking the first game this season that the Penguins have been completely healthy. Eric Godard and Martin Skoula were healthy scratches. Godard won’t be scratched against Philly Tuesday night, we’ll see who gets pulled (my wild guess is Max Talbot).
- The OT powerplay goal gave the Pens an overall 1-for-6 night with the man advantage.
- Pretty good night in the faceoff circle, Crosby was 18-for-26, Craig Adams was 5-for-8 and Staal was 8-for-12.
- Four blocked shots for both Alex Goligoski and Mark Eaton.
- Another big night in the hit department, with 34 for the Pens, compared to 13 for the Panthers. Brooks Orpik led with seven, Adams with six.
- As it should be, Crosby led in shots with seven, followed by Malkin with six and Gonchar with five.
As mentioned, the Pens now will have a home-and-home series with the Flyers, starting at the Igloo on Tuesday night. It’s on Versus, so you fellow DirecTV patrons get ready to find that online feed.

Kudos blastfacts all around! Though…the pens didn’t deserve to win this game after that 3rd period.

No apology needed Tony it’s all good, except the power play.
It seemed that on every power play the Pens were going back to get the puck in their zone after the initial draw. I wonder what Sid’s numbers were on the first face-off of power plays? Those pp numbers might be a bit misleading.
