NBC pre-empting Penguins/Red Wings for Pat Robertson in some markets

You’re gonna be out of luck if you were looking forward to watching the Stanley Cup Finals rematch between the Penguins and Red Wings and unlucky enough to live in one of several local television markets.  NBC will be pre-empting programming on Sunday afternoon in the following markets in order to broadcast Pat Robertson’s “700 Club Telethon”.  The markets are:

WAVY 10 Norfolk (yup, that’s mine)
WBRE 28 Scranton
WDTN 2 Dayton
WVVA 6 Beckley-Bluefield
WSMV 4 Nashville
WVTM 13 Birmingham
KKCO 11 Grand Junction

This is the funnest thing I’ve read all week (no, I don’t live in one of those markets).

Did NBC make a deal with the devil?  Pun definitely intended.

I forgot to add:  Who makes these schedules?  Am I really going to get up at 9:30 on a Sunday to watch hockey?  Even the Pens get a…“I’ll check the score when I get up” from me.  Maybe it’s a good time for the east coast but the west coast does not compute.

Kinda like when Eastern Time Zone teams play on the West Coast at 10:30 pm est…

@John W.: Yeah, but how many of those 10:30 eastern starts are nationally televised games?

Answer: zero, unles you’re talking about the CBC or TSN in Canada.

You’re comparing apples and oranges. San Jose and LA aren’t going to start playing at 4:30 local time (when everyone’s just getting out of work) just so John W. back east can watch the game on Center Ice at a convenient time.

Get serious.

But east coast teams should change their start times so that Josh from Whitehorse can sleep in?

He is. A larger portion of NHL fans are in the Central and Eastern Time Zones.

It doesn’t matter where a larger portion of the fans are. If the game’s in San Jose, they’re gonna play the game at the most convenient time for the local fans. So if that’s a 10 or 10:30 start in the East, so be it.

Anyway, Pat Robertson is a disgraceful con man like every other televangelist and the fact that these NBC affiliates are doing this is really unbelievable. NBC stoops to a new low each day. To preempt a national broadcast of a sporting event for this so-called religious bullcrap just shows how little they care about hockey.

Hey Tony, I’ll email you details of my paysite account.  Feel free to use it tomorrow, as I will not be blacked out for the sweet baby Jesus.

Although you are a Pens fan, you are one of the good ones, and I’d hate for you to miss the game.

The Pat Robertson who made the lunatic remark about the Haiti earthquake disaster?

If so, my heart goes out to the afflicted.

Eh maybe…I thought my response was rather funny. The NHL always seems to think the majority of the fans are on the east coast.  smile

Unfrigginreal.

I know Pens fans hate having NBC do their games in the first place but getting denied for this huckster’s shillfest.

Only this friggin’ league would go through crap like this with NBC.  If it’s not the Preakness it’s something else.  Unreal.

If it makes anyone feel better, I’ll be getting up at 7:30am for a hockey game (on a sunday). I planned on driving 2 hours to pissburgh for the game when it was a 5pm affair. The shifted start means coffee in the cupholder instead of Mickey Redmond’s ginger ale.

Play a game at 3 eastern on a weekend, and it’s fairly convenient for everyone. Play the game at noon, and you’re dismissing a section of the continent. Now, it could be that NBC has other stuff they want to air at 3 eastern that’s more important than hockey, but if it’s the NHL deciding that noon eastern is the way to go, they’re just making the wrong choice.

And playing west coast games at 7 on the east coast is a ridiculous suggestion that frankly doesn’t deserve a response.

This argument is idiotic, just like the NHL.  Starting a nationally televised game at 12:30 Eastern on a Sunday is asinine.  Pre-empting it for Pat Robertson, likewise.

The game time suits me just fine. But I’m six hours ahead of the US east coast, so it’s more about timing dinner than breakfast.

It’s slightly ironic that the game is televised in Denmark (and you can purchase a stream access as well) while some of the locals have the pleasure of Pat Robertson and his Christian douche armada.

Unfortunately I live on Scranton. This doesn’t surprise me. WBRE is a joke of a station to begin with. Hopefully someone will stream the game on ustream (there’s an app for that).

For what it’s worth:
a)  It’s a local-station decision, not the network (NBC)
b)  The local-station made this decision because The 700+ Lunatic Club is paying them for the airtime and it is no doubt more than the revenue they would make selling commercials in the hockey game.
c)  Yes, Pat Robertson is the Christian leader that blamed the Haitians for bringing the earthquake upon themselves for making a deal with the devil to end French occupation
d)  More importantly:  Red Wings Suck.

I had to watch on an internet feed instead of my nice 52” HD because of this crap. Turned out to be one of the best games of the season. Hey NBC…Rot in hell with the pathetic piece of crap Pat Robertson. I’m going to donate $25 to the Church of Satan in the name of NBC and Pat Robertson. No wonder NBC is consistently in the toilet with ratings.

Even bigger question, will the Penguins be able to make it to D.C. from Montreal to play the game? D.C. area is supposed to get 20-30” of snow thru 10pm Saturday night. I can only imagine what that’ll do to their travel plans . Anyone heard anything?
