- Nice to see Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin seemingly patch things up this week at the All-Star Game, albeit with some reported mediation by fellow Russian Ilya Kovalchuk. So does that mean we’ll be spared hearing about their “feud” anymore, or will it fester like the “Staals are brothers” endless topic. On the ice, even though Malkin and Ovechkin are back on speaking terms, you’d be foolish to think that Ovechkin is going to lighten up on his head-hunting, the dude is simply too intense to do that.
- Great to see Malkin win the Accuracy competition last night. You had a feeling that he would do very well in that category.
- Kris Letang looked comfortable out there in the Youngstars game, although I was a little disappointed that he tried to use trick moves on both of his breakaways. He’s got good enough moves that he’s shown on the shootouts over the past year plus to use one of those, rather than the trick moves that he ended up messing up anyway.
- I would have liked to have seen Sidney Crosby in the breakaway event. I’m sure Sid’s got some sick moves.
- The Penguins’ new arena, the Consol Energy Center, is starting to look like, well, a new arena, at least in skeletal form. There are a few good outlets that are available to check out the arena’s construction progress. In addition to the Penguins’ webcam, the Pittsburgh attorney firm of Goldberg, Persky & White have set up their own webcam from a different angle of the arena. Also, on the SkyscraperPage.com message forum, there is a thread dedicated to the arena. In the thread some posters have uploaded some nice still photographs. The two Pittsburgh papers, as well as the television stations, have also started to ramp things up in terms of arena coverage. In today’s Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Rob Rossi has a new video and report on the arena progress. From what I’ve seen and read, there’s going to be significant progress made aesthetically in the next few months.
- The All-Star break is giving the Penguins some much-needed time to heal from their numerous injuries. It’s looking like both Pascal Dupuis and Max Talbot will return for the Pens’ first game back vs. the Rangers. The Pittsburgh PG’s Dave Molinari reports in today’s paper that Sergei Gonchar has about a month to go before returning from his shoulder surgery, which is a bit earlier than originally thought. And not a moment too soon, obviously.
- Wednesday’s game vs. the Rangers at the Igloo will be the Penguins’ only opportunity to provide any support for the cross-town Steelers this week leading up to Super Bowl XLIII, similar to what they did prior to the AFC Championship Game. After Wednesday’s home game, are on the road for stops Friday in New Jersey, Saturday in Toronto, and Tuesday in Montreal.
- Unusually quiet in terms of rumors at the All-Star break, but with the trade deadline about five weeks away, snippets are starting to appear. Recent rumors (again, take them for what they’re worth) have had the Penguins interested in Tampa Bay’s Marty St. Louis and Adam Hall, Florida’s Nathan Horton and Minnesota’s Marian Gaborik, among others.

Maybe, but what’s the point? Now that the competition is to see who has the best comedy routine (and that’s fine, if the fans want to see it), why would anyone bother practicing actual moves? I wonder if any players will take it seriously next year as opposed to just clowning around….
