As a reminder of what the bottom line of this game really is: From the Pittsburgh Business Times:
Sponsorship revenue for the NHL’s upcoming Winter Classic has increased 20 percent from 2010 numbers, putting total revenue for the event in the mid-seven-figure range. The outdoor game on Jan. 1 at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field pits the Penguins against the Washington Capitals.
According to Keith Wachtel, NHL senior vice president of integrated sales, the NHL sold out of its sponsorship inventory two months prior to the game. “Last year we sold out about a month before [the game], and in 2009 it was a few weeks, and in 2008 we were selling up until the final days,” he said. Heinz Field affords greater infrastructure for signage and branding opportunities, as well as a bigger audience than the last two hosts — Chicago’s Wrigley Field and Boston’s Fenway Park. The football stadium will seat about 67,000 fans, compared with 38,000 at Fenway.
