Penguins close to blockbuster trade ??

UPDATE 9:40 ET: Add the Denver Post onto this chain.
Well, it is getting close to that time, isn’t it.
TheFourthPeriod.com reports that the Colorado Avalanche may be close to a multi-player trade, with the Bruins and Penguins rumored as possible trading partners.
TFP mentions that the Pens are interested in winger Milan Hejduk and may be willing to part with either Ryan Whitney or Jordan Staal as part of the deal.
Now, if that’s not enough, we also have a very unconfirmed, but very interesting and possibly very related post on one of the main Penguins message boards tonight.
On the message board letsgopens.com, a user named “tmanhockey31” posted the following rumored deal. Again, no confirmation nor credibilty, but once you read TFP’s report above, it may have some veracity. Here’s what is said.
L.A. gets: Jordan Staal (PIT), Tyler Kennedy (PIT), Miroslav Satan (PIT), 5th round pick (COL)
Colorado gets: Ryan Whitney (PIT), 3rd round pick (PIT), 4th round pick (LA)
Pittsburgh gets: Wojtek Wolski (COL), Chris Stewart (COL), Alexander Frolov (LA), 2nd round pick (LA)
I have to repeat, who the hell knows if this is completely made up or not. As everyone knows at this time of year, rumors are flying from all directions.
But, I thought that I’d show you both sets of rumors, one from a respectable hockey site, and one out of the blue, and see where, if anywhere, it ends up.

Looks like a typical fan board deal, with their favorite team getting all the goods in exchange for next to nothing

Seems like a lot for Colorado to give up for only Ryan Whitney and a few mid-round picks.

Yeah, I realize it’s most likely rubbish, but like all rumors, take them with a grain of salt….

I don’t know if this trade is legit but i would sure love to see it happen.

For that proposed trade no way can I see Colorado wanting anything to do with that

The big prize for Pittsburgh in this deal, Frolov, has one more year on his deal before he’s UFA. Wolski would be RFA in one year and Stewart projects as a grinder. Staal and Whitney are under contract, each at a $4M/per cap hit, for four more years each. The deal would depend on Frolov signing an extension, or it’s a loss for Pittsburgh.

we’re citing msg boad rumors now? and we dig on ecklund
Posted by Derek on 02/24/09 at 11:05 PM ET
Well he’s a little better than Eklund in that A: Admits it’s from a message board and B: He’s obviously said its just a rumor. C: Gave all details and left it to readers to discuss. So I appreciate the rumor, something that would be an interesting deal, but Stevie Y is right, little biased towards the Pens.

Wow, I know my team sucks right now, but the Avs get hosed in that deal.

Why would Colorado want anything to do with that? Not happening. Just wishful thinking by Pittsburg fans.

Not sure how Pittsburgh losing a top 5 draft pick in Staal and an all-star caliber defenseman in Whitney dramatically favors the Pens in this deal…seems like each team wins from this deal

considering the way each of those players are playing now, the Avs would get completely hosed. however, considering potential, each team pretty much evens out, even though the Pens still seem to get more.
don’t worry though, Avs fans. my sources say (and btw, my sources are my dad and my common sense) that this trade will not happen at all. it’s just a BS rumor made up to stir the interest of message board readers (and in particular, Pens fans, like me).
it will be funny to listen to the disappointment this Saturday (the day the trade is rumored to happen) of tools that think this trade is actually going down…

Yeah, but one thing I noticed recently is OUTSIDE of Pittsburgh how much higher that Whitney is regarded…. Obviously, most have only seen the highlights, rather than the defensive blunders…

The Kings don’t need another center.. Thanks but no thanks

Puckhead from Jersey - I think you’re going to be changing your “Chris Stewart projects as a grinder” tune tomorrow night when the Avs play the Devils. He’ll be a top 6 power forward and by the time he’s 25 every GM in the league will be drooling after this guy. I honestly cannot remember a guy that big who can skate that well as well as have great hands, hits hard and can fight.
This is a HORRIBLE deal for Colorado…no way in hell this happens.
