OK, real quick.... Flash back to Animal House. The Delta’s are reviewing the pledges’ pictures on the beer-soaked projector screen and Kent Dorfman’s pudgy face is shown to a showering of beer cans.
Hoover tries to call the Delta’s down, explaining ”This is Kent Dorfman. He’s a Legacy from Harrisburg” (His brother, Fred, was a ‘59 Delta, if you recall).
Sorry, just felt like that trip down memory lane. That, possibly unconsciously, maybe not, was one of the themes of the Penguins’ recently completed draft. Two of the seven Penguins’ picks are Legacy’s, so to speak, as they are related to two of more notable Penguins of the past.
A rundown of the Pens’ Day Two picks:
Round Two - D Philip Samuelsson, 6’3” 198lbs. That’s right, it’s Ulfie’s boy. Ulf Samuelsson, arguably the most fierce hitter in Penguins history, played a key role in the Pens’ Cups in ‘91 and ‘92. Philip will be attending Boston College. Scouting Report - Chicago head coach Steven R. Poapst - “Phil seems to find himself in the right position at all times. He has a very active and good stick that allows him to break up a lot of plays defensively and wins most of his one on one battles for the puck. He is a player that is poised and confident with puck while under pressure and can make the right decision in most of those situations. A lot of people will question his skating but he is so good at owning his space by making sure he is in the right position with a good stick it does not become a factor. Phil has been very consistent this season and has improved greatly in the USHL. He is a leader on this team and comes ready to compete everyday. He has a lot of upside and will continue to grow as a player.”
Round Three - RW Ben Hanowski, 6’2” 198lbs. Had 73 goals and 135 points (73-62-135) in 31 games this season for Little Falls HS in Minnesota, including 14 hat tricks and 10 games with six-or-more points. Set the record for most points in a high school hockey career, surpassing an 11-year-old mark of 378 points, set by Johnny Pohl of Red Wing High from 1994-95 through 1997-98. Hanowski finished his career with 405 points (196-209-405) needing 111 games to break the mark Pohl had set in 112 – he tied the record with a shorthanded goal during a five-on-three and surpassed the record with a power-play goal. He will attend St. Cloud State. Scouting Report - NHL Central Scouting’s Jack Barzee - “Ben needs to improve his overall skating, but his unselfishness, his hands and above all his ability to score goals sets him apart. His knack for scoring goals is similar to Thomas Vanek – his extra dimension is scoring goals.”
Round Four - RW Nick Petersen, 6’2”, 186lbs. Scored 37 goals and 90 points in 68 games for Shawninigan of the QMJHL last season. Scouting report not available.
Round Five - D Alex Velischek, 6’0”, 200lbs. Son of former NHL’er Randy Velischek. Will attend Providence College. Had 51 points (16-35-51) and a plus-61 rating leading his Morristown, NJ high school team to a state-record 27 victories. Scouting report not available.
[Pick obtained via trade with NY Rangers for unsigned goalie Chad Johnson] C Andy Bathgate, 6’0”, 164lbs. Grandson of former Penguin Andy Bathgate. Bathgate only scored 4 goals and 16 points this season before a shoulder injury ended his season in January. Scouting report not available.
Sixth Round - D Viktor Ekbom - 6’2”, 194lbs. Scored two goals and seven points with two separate Swedish teams in ‘08-’09. Scouting report not available.
The Penguins traded their final pick to the Canadiens for a 6th round pick in the 2010 draft.

About The Confluence
Welcome to The Confluence, a Pittsburgh Penguins blog since 2006. Originally at Blogspot, then at MVN, The Confluence has over 1000 articles reporting Penguins news as well as jumping on my soapbox to opine constructive Penguins criticism. My posts are regularly linked by hockey websites such as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Empty Netters and Yahoo!’s Puck Daddy, and I’ve done guest blogger spots on such websites as the New York Times. I invite you to spend a little time and peruse the archives at all of the sites for some of my better work. I am a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, but don’t confuse me with my fellow Chief at A2Y.
