From the Penguins:
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ 3-2 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night drew a 10.95 rating on FSN Pittsburgh – the second-highest rating ever for a Penguins’ regular season game.
The only Penguins’ regular season game to draw a larger local TV audience was Mario Lemieux’s comeback game on Dec. 27, 2000—one of the unique events in the history of sports—which registered a 15.90 rating.
Six of the Penguins’ top 10 regular-season ratings of all-time have come this season on FSN.
“This news comes in the same week that Penguins fans were named No. 1 in the NHL by Forbes magazine, and it is another example of their unbridled passion for Penguins hockey. We salute them again,” team president David Morehouse.
“The loyalty and commitment of Penguins fans never ceases to amaze us, and we’re delighted that the strong partnership between the Penguins and FSN Pittsburgh has produced these kinds of phenomenal ratings numbers,” said Ted Black, Senior Vice President/General Manger of FSN Pittsburgh.
The previous No. 2 was a 10.74 rating for the Penguins’ Oct. 23 game against Florida this season.

Pittsburgh is a one horse town….as long as they’re winning.
You got it.
Terrible sports town.

Yeah, Kevin. Like the Patriots had a following before 2001. In case you can’t count, the Steelers are the defending champions and have six Super Bowl wins to your three. Or should I say three*.
The Red Sox are the biggest hypocrites ever. They criticize Steinbrenner for spending a ton of money, but the Red Sox do the same thing. The Celtics had no following until five years ago or so. So spare me with this World Champion talk.
Boston’s a joke.
Posted by cs6687 on 12/19/09 at 12:30 PM ET
Kevin is just jealous that his city with double the population of Pittsburgh can’t get TV ratings that high.
Posted by Kstewy16 on 12/19/09 at 12:31 PM ET
What else are they going to watch? The Stillers….not likely…ha ha ha ha. Here in Boston we have the World Champion Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots. Pittsburgh is a one horse town….as long as they’re winning.

You just insist on starting this every time, don’t you….
The Red Sox have won two, repeat TWO, championships in 90 years…. Great job with that….Even the lowly Pirates, in your estimation, have double that amount in that same timeframe…..
The Patriots are ONE loss away from not only getting knocked out of first place by the Dolphins, but possibly out of the playoffs altogether…. And they’ve won three Super Bowls, come see me when they double that, m’kay ??
And, if memory serves me correctly, the World Champs of the NBA are the Lakers, not the Celtics….
And finally, since you failed to bring it up, the perennially underachieving Bruins haven’t won a Cup in nearly 40 years…. The Penguins have won three since then….
So for the sake of everyone here, think before you type….

And before you begin bitching about the Pirates, we Burgher’s might not waste our money going to the games of a team that has abandoned their fans, but we still have tons of fans. Proof? Our TV ratings are higher than 11 other MLB teams including some large market teams like the Orioles, the Mets, the Dodgers and Angels, and the White Sox.
3 well supported sports teams. Not bad for a small market team.
Posted by Kstewy16 on 12/19/09 at 12:35 PM ET
Should say small market city, not team.
Posted by Kstewy16 on 12/19/09 at 12:37 PM ET
Pittsburghers don’t have to bow to anyone from a larger market.
Great town, great sports fans and a great tradition of championship teams.
The Steelers are the model franchise in the NFL. Kind of like the NFL’s version of the Red Wings of the last two decades. They’ve having a bad year, but it’s not over and they’ll be back.
Me, I got to see my three favorite teams win championships last year, Steelers, Penguins and Tarheels (alma mater). Unbelievable.
I want more this year, but this is kind of a gravy year, you can’t hit the trifecta every time you go to the track.

Yes, because we all know those Detroit Tiger fans that were there for that World Series run had been there all the time.

Red Whiner - “You got it.
Terrible sports town”
What do you call Detroit? The Dead wing fans don’t even go to the games anymore, they just have their online book club blogs for each game. Luckily the seats are red otherwise it’d look even worse there with all the empty seats. Pistons are a joke now, Lions are the Lions, and Tigers aren’t much better.

You sent the Pens to the brink of bankruptcy, twice ...you’re a brutal sports town.
What does your arena hold, 16,000? Wow, good job selling it out.
Detroit is going through an economic meltdown that makes Pitt’s issues with the steel industry look pale in comparison, and they’re still putting 18-19,000 in the Joe each night.
Pitt is not major sports market, primarily because of the fan base, which only supports teams when winning.
Brutal.

Baseball sucks. What sane person follows that boring sport?
There’s a reason 90-year-old men like baseball.

Do you even know the attendance for the decade for the Bruins? Lets compare:
Total attendance from 2001 - 2009:
Pittsburgh - 124, 832
Boston - 124, 395
Ok, let’s go year by year:
2001 - Boston 15,432 - 88% Pittsburgh 16,277 - 96%
2002 - Boston 15,403 - 88% Pittsburgh 15,649 - 92%
2003 - Boston 15,029 - 86% Pittsburgh 14,750 - 87%
2004 - Boston 15,133 - 86% Pittsburgh 11,877 - 70%
2006 - Boston 16,211 - 92% Pittsburgh 15,804 - 93%
2007 - Boston 14,764 - 84% Pittsburgh 16,424 - 97%
2008 - Boston 15,384 - 88% Pittsburgh 17,076 - 100%
2009 - Boston 17,039 - 97% Pittsburgh 16,975 - 100%
So how is Pittsburgh a much worse hockey market than Boston again? Of course, when I bring up facts, you won’t respond. Don’t worry though, I’ll just post whenever you keep posting your spew.

Red Winger, the Penguins have sold out 130+ consecutive games. You’re right. Nice job by Penguins fans of selling it out.
Did you really blame the fans for putting the team in bankruptcy? I think it had something to do with rising player salaries (thanks to teams like the Rangers and Red Wings) and a horrid lease for Mellon Arena that has long since been restructured, just to name a few reasons.
Pitt is not major sports market, primarily because of the fan base, which only supports teams when winning.
Even when the Steelers are bad, it’s hard to get tickets. And those Detroit Tigers sure have had a heavy following for years and years. Joke. You can now STFU.

Yes, because attendance was the main issue in everything, not owners that spent more money than they had or politicians that went back on their word. I can’t wait until the seats are empty in Detroit when they miss the playoffs for a couple years. But of course everyone will say it’s an economic problem but we will see.

are we really arguing about tv ratings? i like it.

Don’t you think you could say something negative about any city if you wanted to? Isn’t it good for hockey that some markets are doing really, really well? Not just the NHL, but kids that want to learn to play because their local team is doing well, and they’re caught up in the excitement?
I have absolutely no reason to like or dislike the Bruins, but I hope they’re reasonably successful because I think its good for hockey. Same goes for Chicago. I hate the Flyers, but its also a catch 22 because the day their season ends it’s the end of hockey coverage in Philadelphia.
Some of you remind me of those people at work who will find something to bitch about every day because that’s what keeps your world spinning. Somewhere at Google there is a guy playing pool at 1pm on a Wednesday, complaining as he collects his bonus. You really want to be that guy?

Unbelievable the trolls that come out when anything Penguins turns up on the front page.

Or, because the population of Pittsburgh is less than 1/2 of that in the other major markets (NY, Boston, LA, Philly, ect).
But, tell yourself whatever you gotta tell yourself to take your mind off of the image you see in my avatar. I have a feeling that’ll be burned into the back of your mind for a long, long time, though.
