Penguins keep on rolling with 4-1 win over Kings

So much for a trap game, or perhaps looking forward towards Sunday’s big matchup with Philadelphia.

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin both had a goal and an assist, and the Penguins earned points in their 12th consecutive game after a 4-1 win over the Kings tonight at the Igloo.

Bill Guerin and Tyler Kennedy added goals for the Pens, who are now 12-1-3 under IHCDB.

Marc-Andre Fleury continued his excellent recent play, stopping 24 of 25 shots.  His only blemish came as the result of a deflected shot on a Kings’ 5-on-3 powerplay.

After an initial ten minutes filled with mostly penalty killing, the Penguins got on the scoreboard first on a great individual play by Crosby.  Crosby stole the puck from Justin Williams by laying his stick flat to the ice, then quickly launched the best backhanded shot in the game past Kings’ goalie Jon Quick to give the Pens a 1-0 lead at the 12:33 mark of the first period.

They doubled their lead late in the period on the powerplay when Crosby took a pass from Sergei Gonchar along the right boards and made a perfect pass to Malkin coming around the Kings’ net for the easy tap-in, making it 2-0 Pens.

It remained that way until midway through the second period when Tyler Kennedy fired a slapper from the left point that Jordan Staal inadvertently blocked.  Hal Gill grabbed the loose puck and launched a wrister towards the net that Quick stopped, but Kennedy was there to bang the rebound into the net with a backhander to make it 3-0 Penguins.

They made it 4-0 two minutes later when Malkin stole the puck in the Kings’ zone and made a nice backhanded centering feed to Guerin, who fired a wrister past Quick at the 13:31 mark.

The Kings got their only tally in the third, as stated before, on the powerplay, when Drew Doughty fired a slapper from the right point that Michal Handzus got his stick on to deflect it past Fleury for the 4-1 final score.  Not only were the Penguins shorthanded 3-on-5, but they also had a broken stick as well.

Other notes;
- Outside of the one powerplay goal allowed, the Pens’ penalty killers were outstanding again, going 7-for-8.
- Pens’ powerplay went 1-for-4.
- Four blocked shots for both Gill and Rob Scuderi.
- Five hits for Chris Kunitz led the Pens.
- Gonchar led the Pens in icetime with an even 25:00.

The Penguins will now host their rival Philadelphia Flyers in a Sunday afternoon showdown.
