Penguins’ Malkin is not a happy camper

Props to Fanhouse’s Eric McErlain, who provided a translated version of an interview between Sovetsky’s Mikhail Bykov and the Pens’ Evgeni Malkin.
Malkin is not happy with the Pens’ play of late, and speaking strictly for myself, I’m glad to see it. Malkin, who was given the alternate captain’s “A” this year, was expected to provide an increased level of leadership by HCMT.
Here’s hoping his English is good enough to chew some of his teammates’ asses.
Some of the notable quotes;
- “And we didn’t look ourselves out there. Three shots in a period? This is horrible!”
- “We had no shots on power play! This is awful!”
- “That’s why I think that not everything is alright with the team. We were winning because we played teams weaker than us. But to compare with the league favorites we are considerably behind: we lost to the Rangers and the Sharks. We have enough problems. The only excuse we have is that we have a lot of injured players. But we have to play well even without them. We haven’t changed anything in the way we play that took us last summer to the Stanley Cup Finals. That means we have to keep working and get some stability at last.”
Bravo, Geno, bravo.
Even with stalwart defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney out of the lineup, you saw a glimpse of how powerful the Penguins can be during the last five minutes of the Sharks game. Of course, the game is a helluva lot longer than five minutes. The Penguins have had spurts of sometimes twenty, sometimes forty minute games so far this season. They’re gonna have to start playing sixty minute games to begin to reach the level of play they were at late last year.
