Penguins’ trade for Garon is a head-scratcher, at first glance

As Paul just wrote, the Oilers and Penguins swung a trade today, with the Oilers sending Mathieu Garon to the Penguins for Dany Sabourin, Ryan Stone and a 4th round draft pick in 2011.

Maybe some more wheeling and dealing is in the works by Pens’ GM Ray Shero, because they’re got to be VERY tight against the salary cap if not over right now, but as of right now I don’t see the methods of his madness on this one.

Garon’s statistics, if we’re going to strictly go by those, are actually worse than Sabourin’s.  Both goalies’ records are 6-8 (Sabu’s 6-8-2, technically).  But Garon’s GAA is nearly one goal per game higher, with a 3.71 GAA vs. 2.85 for Sabourin.  Their save pct. is about even, .895 for Garon vs. .898 for Sabourin.

So unless Garon’s picks his game up in the remaining months of the season, there’s nothing to say that he’s going to do any better than Sabourin has.

And Shero gave up Sabourin, Stone, and a pick in order to acquire Garon, who could go at the end of the year ??

Well, let’s hope you know what you’re doing Ray.

I don’t really see the motive for making this trade either, but like all moves between now and the deadline, you just have to wait and see how it shakes out after the deadline. Maybe EDM is moving cap to make a bigger move, who knows. Garon’s 1.1 isn’t a huge handcuff but you never know. Spezza does make a lot of cash, after all…

Garon is a much better goalie than Sabourin, he won the Molson Cup award last season in Edmonton (most three-star selections).  This season, MacT destroyed his confidence with the three goalie carousel that they have operated in Edmonton.  He just helped win a big divisional game for Edmonton in Colorado last night and this is his reward.  Not sure what they’re doing in Edmonton these days.

Pens fans should be pleased with this deal, Fleury - Garon should be just as good as Fleury - Conklin was last season.

I hope you’re right, and admittedly I haven’t followed Edmonton nearly as close as I do the Pens, but as of right now his stats don’t reflect Garon being so much better than Sabourin…

I really like this trade regardless of what people say. i never really was a big Sabu fan at all. I thought they really made the wrong decision at the end of the year by keeping him and getting rid of Conklin. Should have did it the other way around there. I am very worried about the salary cap for them, because I would like to see and nice trade at the deadline for a winger. According to Buffalo blogs, Buffalo is in dying need of D man and the Pens really need a D man. According the Buffalo blogs they want to get rid of Afinogenov. It really would be a key they the Pens could really use. The Pens have way too many D man and once Gonchar is back there is going to be some old men out. Thats what needs to happy with the Pens A. Wants to create room and B. help Sidney or Malkin on the lines. Yes. Afinogenov salary is 3.5 Million right now, but people like Satan and maybe a D man might be a good trade and put them perfectly. Satan hasn’t been performing to the level that I thought he would this year. I not saying that should be a trade, just and example. The Pens really need to do something with the D situation because Gonchar is coming back fast and some players will want to play, but the Pens have no room for them. They need offense period and that is what they need to address
