Pens need power play plan

Many ‘Burghers dislike Mark Madden.  He definitely has had his controversial moments.  But one thing you can’t argue; The man knows his hockey.  And if I do say so myself, he repeats what I’ve been saying for years now concerning the Penguins’ powerplay;

---------------------------------------
From the Beaver County Times’ Mark Madden;

At 9-2, the Penguins look like champions.  Except when it’s easiest to exert dominance: with the man advantage.

The Penguins’ power play underachieved last year, ranking 20th in the NHL with a conversion percentage of 17.2. So far, so bad this campaign: The Penguins’ PP ranks 17th at 18.4 percent.  Such sustained mediocrity is amazing given the plethora of offensive talent at the Penguins’ disposal. It probably won’t get any better with power-play quarterback Sergei Gonchar out.

Sorry Tony as usual FLOUNDER is wrong, You don’t move Geno!!!

Geno is the guy the PP runs through, Sid does not now or NEVER will have a great shot, Sid needs to be moved either to the other side or Down below the goal line on the PP

The Real problem Continues to be Mike Yeo !! he has no clue what he is doing

Well yeah, I agree with you on that part, I wouldn’t move Geno either… And you know I agree about Yeo....

But he IS right about the stationary part, and that’s why they’re so relatively easy to PK....

I know Sid doesn’t have a great shot, but I think the PP is much better with him on the half wall. If you go back to 06-07 & 07-08 they were betterwith him there. I know there was different personal then, but I beleive that when Sid controls the play on the boards they seem more dangerous as compared to Geno. Just sayin’.

I agree with Madden, but it’s not so much that the PP needs to flow through Crosby, it’s that he needs to be more involved. My logic is this:
You want your best players to have the puck as often as possible so why wouldn’t you do that on the PP? When you have two of the best play makers in the world why not use them BOTH to your advantage? With Crosby down low, he doesn’t get to use his fantastic passing ability and never seems to have the puck. In my opinon, Sid is much better on the half-wall because he sees the ice so exceptionally well; if Guerin parked himself in front of the net, Sid’s shot would get through a lot easier as it would have a better chance of being deflected or not seen by the goalie. The way the PP is now, all the other team’s PK has to do is defend the left side. With Geno on the other side (Guerin’s usual position), the other team’s PK would be forced to spread out because they would have to respect for both Malkin and Crosby, giving Sid and Geno MUCH more room to work.

Plus, with the way the Pens were practicing the PP today (link to the story: http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=503759&navid=DL|PIT|home), with Sid parking himself in front of the net, Sid is going to take a lot more body there than along the half-wall and even the side of the net (where he usually is). This concerns me because of the way he’s always getting injured.
