Pens Notes:  Crosby, Cole Harbour prepare for the day with the Cup

The summer continues to crawl along.  My Pirates continue the cyclical firesales, Steeler preseason games start a week from tomorrow, and my family is finally able to take a break from my son’s baseball All-Stars that annually take a good chunk of the summer.

Anyway, there have been a few nuggets of Penguins’ news lately, sorry if I’m a little tardy in posting on some of them.

- Preparations continue for Captain Sidney Crosby’s day with the Stanley Cup on Friday, his 22nd birthday.  Free shuttle service !!!

- The Penguins named John Hynes as the assistant coach of the Baby Penguins at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

- John Curry signed a two-year, two-way deal with the Pens.  Most likely, Curry and recent free agent signee Brent Johnson will compete for the backup goalie job, although Johnson should have the nod with his veteran status.

- One of the more interesting free agent signings prior to last season has gone to greener pastures.  Fan favorite, and former Finnish Elite League scoring champion Janne Pesonen has signed with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL.  During the FHCMT regime, Pesonen didn’t get hardly any playing time, and when he did, he really didn’t exhibit any flashes that would warrant an extended look.  Now with HCDB’s uptempo style, I don’t think Pesonen would have faired any better, if not worse.

- Free agent stragglers continue to get signed every now and then.  In terms of the Penguins, there have been rumblings about Alex Tanguay, although with only about a buck and a half of Cap space available, not sure how valid those rumors could really be.
