Pens Stats: Florida trip hasn’t been sunshiny for Penguins

Another huge week for the Penguins.  The fact that it’s the week of the trade deadline just makes it that much more intriging.

The Pens continue their road trip, which has started great with wins at Chicago and Dallas, on Tuesday in Tampa, Thursday in Florida and Sunday in Washington.

While I’m sure the Pens will enjoy the warmer weather, recent history indicates that trips to the Sunshine State have been anything but that for them.

Let’s take a closer look, as well as some other interesting Penguins stats:

Overall, since the 2001-2002 season, the Penguins have identical 3-8-1 records at both Tampa Bay and Florida.  Since the lockout, the Pens are 2-4 at Tampa and 3-3 at Florida.  The tide seemed to change a bit last season, when the Pens went 2-0 at Tampa and 1-1 at Florida.

Some other interesting stats I thought of recently:

- Is it just me, or does it seem that the Pens were in more overtime and shootout games LAST year ??  Well, if you agree with me, you’d be wrong like I was.  The Penguins have been to overtime and/or the shootout an identical 16 times so far this year, as well as last year.  Last season, in those 16 games, the Penguins went 1-4 in overtime and 7-4 in the shootout, for an extra 8 points.  This season, in those 16 games, the Pens are 6-2 in overtime and 4-4 in the shootout for an extra 10 points.  Just doesn’t seem like that, does it ??

- Lots of debate going on recently in a potential competition for the Hart Trophy between Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin.  Ovechkin certainly has the scoring stats if you want to justify his selection based on that, with 46 goals and 82 points.  However, Malkin, while he “only” has 29 goals, also has 63 assists for a total of 92 points, 10 more than Ovechkin.  But here’s another couple of stats that may get overlooked in the discussion.  Malkin leads the NHL in takeaways with 77, while Ovechkin is 17th with 50.  In addition, Ovechkin leads the NHL in giveaways with 83, while Malkin is 9th with 64.  And really, when both of these guys were getting ready to be drafted, that was the discussion.  Which one was going to be the best goal scorer, and which one was going to be the best overall player.

- Three guesses who leads the NHL in shooting percentage.  Give up ??  Old buddy Ryan Malone.  After a horrendous start in Tampa, he now has 22 goals, with a shooting percentage of 22.4%.

- The Penguins now have three of the top sixteen players in the NHL in hits, with Brooks Orpik tied for the league lead with 243, Matt Cooke #4 at 215 and new Penguins Chris Kunitz #16 at 157.

- Rob Scuderi is 9th in the league in blocked shots with 136.

T minus 53 hours until the trade deadline…...
