Sykora’s late goal gives Penguins big 1-0 win over stubborn Isles

That was really becoming a frustrating game to watch.
The Penguins and Islanders spent most of the game the Islanders’ zone, a result of the IHCDB’s new emphasis on an aggressive forecheck. That specific part of the Pens’ game was working wonderfully, the problem was that they couldn’t put any pucks past Isles’ goalie Yann Danis.
That finally changed with 2:28 to go in the game, when Sergei Gonchar simply threw a puck on net that pinballed around a while, before Petr Sykora banged the puck past Danis to give the Penguins a huge 1-0 win over the Islanders at the Igloo.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves for the shutout.
With the win the Penguins now have 66 points, only one point behind the 9th place Carolina, two points behind both 7th place Florida and 8th place Buffalo, and four points behind the Rangers, who lost in a shootout tonight in Toronto.
Kris Letang was back in the lineup, and he really looked insprired. FINALLY, because of the absence of Ryan Whitney, he was placed on the 1st unit powerplay on the left point, and Letang took full advantage of it, generating four shots on goal.
Other notes:
- Despite getting called up from W-B/S, Janne Pesonen was scratched. Bill Thomas was back in the lineup.
- Both teams went 0-for-3 on the powerplay.
- Jordan Staal went 10 for 13 on faceoffs, Evgeni Malkin went 14 for 21.
- Six hits awarded to Brooks Oprik, five each to Tyler Kennedy and Matt Cooke.
- Sergei Gonchar led the Pens in icetime with 26:26.
Big roadtrip now on tap for the Penguins, hitting Chicago on Friday night, Dallas on Sunday afternoon, then trips to visit the Lightning, Panthers and Capitals next week.
