Talbot to have shoulder surgery:  Championship DVD released

UPDATE:  Per the Penguins, surgery was performed today.  His recovery is expected to take four to five months.

In what has been rumored for a few weeks, Game 7 hero Max Talbot’s agent has confirmed that Talbot will have surgery this week to correct a dislocated shoulder.  There is a chance that Talbot may miss at least part of training camp, if not the start of the regular season.  According to his agent, Talbot’s shoulder had been “popping in and out”.

Also, the Penguins’ Stanley Cup Championship DVD was premiered last night at a Pittsburgh theater and will be available for the public today.  Hockeybuzz’ Brian Metzer and the boys at Pensblog were there in all their glory.

Nothing new on the free agency front, it’s expected the next signing for GM Ray Shero will be a veteran defenseman (such as Jay McKee), although a veteran backup goaltender is a possibility as well.

Does Talbot’s surgery, leaving him out until probably December, mean Sykora could be signed to a one-year deal?  Shero has been rumored to be talking with him.  I think 1-year at 1 million would be good for both sides.  Sykora isn’t getting a lot of interest elsewhere, and the Pens could use another veteran winger.  He could have a good year, and possibly sign for more next year.  This is all assuming he is healthy himself.  Let’s Go Pens!

Shero has answered my question of yesterday, by saying the organ-i-zation will fill Talbot’s role from within.  It will probably be with Tim Wallace as the roster replacement, and possibly Tyler Kennedy as the Malkin line replacement.  I would not be surprised to see Pascal Dupuis moved up from the 4th line temporarily.  That is why his $1.4 million salary/cap hit is justified.  Dupuis can fill in on a top line in the short run as well as provide excellent penalty killing.  6th defenseman and back-up goalie are all that’s left for Shero on siging front.

I think no matter what situation your looking at the defense is gonna be weakened coming into the start of the regular season. Maybe some of the rookie defenseman can step it up. I feel that Talbot will not be gone for barely any of the regular season cause that surgery is known to heal pretty quickly.
