This is just annoying.  The Penguins weren’t even a glimmer in John Ziegler’s eye when the Bruins wore black & gold.  The Penguins are the poster child for how to be a great team, bottom out and suck ass for 5 years so you can get handed 4 or 5 franchise players.  That’s nothing to get cocky about.

Bitter much?  You forgot to remind us that the team almost left town, too.

John Ziegler became president in 1977. A full 10 years after the Penguins entered the NHL. So it looks like that glimmer you seen in Ziegler’s eye might have been the San Jose Sharks. Clarence Campbell was the NHL’s president during the NHL first expansion.
Just wanted to clear up some facts for you. tongue wink

Another little factoid for you….

They were playing professional hockey in Pittsburgh long before the NHL or the Bruins existed.  The team were called the Pirates wore black and gold.

Pittsburgh was the first place in North America to actually PAY hockey players.

When Pittsburgh was given the NHL franchise in 1967 (actually their 2nd franchise since their first was in 1924-25) Boston objected to them wearing black & gold UNTIL it was deemed by the NHL that Pittsburgh’s black and gold hockey colors actually PRE-DATED the Bruins.
