Penguins down Ducks 5-2: Talbot returns Thursday ?

The Penguins are down four of their starting six defensemen, but their replacements performed just about as well as could be expected in a 5-2 win over a sloppy Anaheim squad at the Igloo.

Matt Cooke had two goals for the Pens, while Jordan Staal notched his 9th career short-handed goal. Marc-Andre Fleury saved 23 of 25 shots on net.

In addition to the win, the Pens may receive an extra boost Thursday night in Ottawa, as Max Talbot told PensTV’s Sam Kasan tonight that he is hoping to return to the lineup in time for the Senators’ game.

Secondary scoring boosts Penguins over Ducks, 4-3

For one game at least, this won’t be the typical California trip for the Penguins that we’ve become accustomed to.

The Penguins got timely goals from Alex Goligoski and Pascal Dupuis (with a Saku Koivu sandwiched in between) in a 78 second span midway through the third period to vault the Pens to a 4-3 win over the Ducks at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

The Pens have now tied the NHL record for road wins to start the season with seven, and can break the record Thursday night in Los Angeles against the Kings.

Whitney trade is a good first start for the Penguins

LOL, and I thought I’d have nothing to talk about today.

You can probably imagine that GMRS wanted to do his dealing this season with more than one minute remaining before the trade deadline ends, like he did last year in the Marian Hossa deal.

Well, he completed the first major deal of the NHL trading season six days early when he dealt disappointing defenseman Ryan Whitney to the Anaheim Ducks for winger Chris Kunitz and budding power forward prospect Eric Tangradi.

On the surface, at least in my mind, I’m pretty satisfied with this deal. But I can just feel that Shero is far from finished when it comes to fine-tuning the Penguins’ roster as they inch closer to a playoff slot.

Ryan Whitney to Ducks for Kunitz and Eric Tangradi

As Paul just mentioned, the Penguins made what has to be regarded as a significant trade today, trading offensive defenseman Ryan Whitney to the Anaheim Ducks for wingers Chris Kunitz and Eric Tangradi.

I’ll have more on this within the next couple of hours after I take care of some personal business.

No Crosby, no problem: Penguins down Ducks, 3-1: Orpik latest injury

I told my 15 year old son before the game that for some reason I had a good feeling coming into this game. He wanted to bet me $20 that the Pens would lose, I wish I would have taken him up on it.

The injury-depleted Penguins, playing without Sidney Crosby and about 35 others, played a pretty solid defensive game against a quality team and got an impressive game from Marc-Andre Fleury in defeating the Ducks, 3-1.

Matt Cooke had two of the three Penguins goals, while Fleury had 21 saves in yet another much-needed win.

However, the win didn’t come without more bad news on the injury front. Brooks Orpik left the game early in the second period with an unspecified injury. Orpik was last seen hunched over near the Penguins’ net, before he headed to the locker room.
