The banner was raised, then it was time to start it all over again.
The Penguins capped off a tremendous night of Stanley Cup championship celebrations with a scrappy 3-2 win over the New York Rangers tonight at the Igloo.
Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby and Tyler Kennedy scored for the Pens, whiile Chris Drury and new Ranger Marian Gaborik scored for the Rangers.

Penguins nab home ice after Rangers’ 4-3 win in Philly
by Tony on 04/12/09 at 07:34 PM ET

What seemed unfathomable not even two months ago is now a reality. Not only did the Penguins make the playoffs when it was looking quite likely they may not, but now they’ve got home-ice advantage, for at least one round anyway.
The Rangers scored two third-period goals in Philly tonight for a 4-3 win over the Flyers, giving the Penguins home-ice advantage in their first-round playoff matchup against Philadelphia.
Give the Rangers a ton of credit, they had absolutely nothing to gain in today’s game. But they played one helluva intense game, surely playing in Philly didn’t hurt that intensity.
The playoff schedules will be released tonight.

Crosby’s goal props Penguins over Rangers, 4-3
by Tony on 03/28/09 at 04:54 PM ET

The important thing is that the Penguins won the game. They got the two points, and the Rangers got none, a good four-point win, as they say.
So in that respect, it doesn’t matter how they did it. But if you’re one of those who analyzes how they did it, you spent most of today’s game at the Igloo shaking your head.
In a penalty-filled game, the Penguins sure did their best to keep the Rangers in the game, but in the end a Sidney Crosby breakaway goal midway through the third period after splitting the Rangers defensemen was the game-winner, as the Penguins bested the Rangers, 4-3.
The win now gives the Penguins 90 points, which in other years would qualify them for the playoffs. While it won’t do it this year, it does keep the pressure on both the Flyers and Canes for 4th and 5th place in the East.

Avery and the Penguins: Should Shero roll the dice ??
by Tony on 02/15/09 at 01:43 PM ET

Aaah Sean Avery. You remember Sean, he’s the one who’s being portrayed as if he’s a cancer on the supposedly-snow white pure National Hockey League.
Sean is in Hartford now, biding his time with the Rangers’ AHL affiliate because the Stars don’t have an AHL team this year. Speculation has been running rampant that the Rangers will re-acquire Avery on re-entry waivers, whenever that is.
That is, unless a team with a worse record than the Rangers rolls the dice and claims Avery first. A team, like perhaps, the Pittsburgh Penguins ??
In Thursday’s Newsday, Steve Zipay stated, in reference to a possible Avery return to the Rangers, that he can’t specify when Avery could make his home debut -- in fact, a team like Pittsburgh, we hear, might claim him on recall waivers.
Things that make you go hmmm, indeed.

3rd Period explosion fuels Penguins over Rangers, 6-2

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I had to recharge the batteries, it happens.
Sidney Crosby said earlier today that basically the Penguins’ playoffs started tonight vs. the Rangers.
Well, if one game could be any indication, their fortunes hopefully will start turning brighter after a 5-goal third period turned a close game into a 6-2 rout over the Rangers at the Igloo.
Kris Letang and Petr Sykora both had two goals for the Pens, and Marc-Andre Fleury had 32 saves for the win.

Penguins, Fleury clamp down on Rangers, 3-0

Maybe, just maybe, we’re seeing the Pittsburgh Penguins start to pull out of this prolonged slump.
Tuesday night, we saw the Penguins play their best defensive game of the year in a 4-2 win over the Flyers.
Today, on a Sunday matinee in hyped-up Pittsburgh awaiting the AFC Championship game in a few hours, the Penguins perhaps played their best offensive game in recent times. Combine that with an excellent performance from Marc-Andre Fleury, who stopped all 33 shots for his 2nd shutout of the year, and the Penguins downed the New York Rangers, 3-0.
The win was the 3rd in the last 4 games for the Pens, who climbed back into playoff contention with the win.

Brooks Oprik and Max Talbot have been ruled out for this afternoon’s matinee matchup vs. the Rangers.
However, Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Rob Scuderi are all game-time decisions. All three practiced yesterday.

Different day, same story: Rangers blank Penguins 5-0

The Penguins worked hard blah, blah, blah.
The Penguins got some unlucky bounces of the puck blah, blah, blah.
But hey, the powerplay went 0 for 8, what else is new.
The Penguins offense stunk up the joint again tonight at the Garden vs. the Rangers, losing their fifth game in a row, 4-0.
What else is there to say.
