Ty Conklin officially clears waivers, will head down to Grand Rapids

I’m not sure what it says about a goaltender when, a week before the trade deadline, and when some teams’ goalies are having trouble stopping beach balls, you’re passed over when opposing teams could snag you for nothing more than a “Draper rule’s” worth of a few thousand bucks in legal fees while you’re on waivers, but the Red Wings breathed a sigh of relief when Ty Conklin was not claimed on the waiver wire and headed down to Grand Rapids this morning to earn some much-needed playing time.
The Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness, MLive’s Ansar Khan and the Grand Rapids Press’s Peter J. Wallner confirm, with Wallner explaining why the Griffins so desperately need Conklin to stabilize their goaltending situation…
Conklin could make his first start Wednesday, when the Griffins host Hamilton at Van Andel Arena.
Since MacDonald was recalled in early February, the Griffins have struggled in the nets with Tom McCollumn and Jordan Pearce. Grand Rapids allowed at least four goals in five of its past seven games.
McCollum, 22, has a goal average average of 3.59 and .883 save percentage, and Pearce, 25, has a 3.53 goals against and an .874 save percentage.
And as the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan notes, Conklin goes out of the scrutiny frying pan and into the playing time fire:
The Wings have said Conklin needs game action, and there will be plenty of opportunities for him to get work this week.
The Griffins host Hamilton (Wednesday) and Lake Erie (Friday) before going on the road to play Toronto (Saturday), for a three-games-in-four-nights stretch.

I don’t really know how the world of GMs really works, but doesn’t it seem like they phone each other and ask if they are waiving someone because, a) they want to get rid of them, or b) if they really want them on the farm?
Perhaps those who were willing to take a chance on Conklin have weighed that against being in Holland’s doghouse.

You’re probably right, but I don’t imagine there are any more GMs clamoring to claim him than there were clamoring to sign him last summer.
