GDT - Game #74: Red Wings at Rangers (7:30)

DET (44-25-4) are at the Big Apple tonight to play the Eastern Conference leading NYR (45-20-7). NYR goalie Henrik Lundqvist is posting Vezina numbers this season, 33-15-5, 1.89 GAA (3), 0.934 Save% (2), #2 inWins, and #1 in Shutouts with 8. No worries though, the Wings will counter with goalie Ty Conklin or Jordan Pearce (in what would be his NHL debut).
In their past seven games, the Red Wings have trailed 3-0 to Washington, 2-0 to San Jose, 4-0 to Anaheim, 2-0 to Los Angeles, 3-1 to Nashville, 2-1 to Los Angeles and 3-1 to Philadelphia - - the Wings went 1-5-1 in that stretch.
Into this world we’re thrown, like a dog without a bone. I got nothing else. LGRW.

NHL CBA Gamesmanship Well Underway.

Last week’s NHL GM meetings concluded with no indication when the league and the NHLPA will finally open negotiations toward a new collective bargaining agreement.
The current CBA expires on September 15th, and while that date is still months away, the fact negotiations toward a new deal have not begun is a tad disconcerting for NHL followers fearful of another work stoppage.
Both sides last fall hinted talks would probably begin soon after the All-Star weekend, but nearly two months following that event, it’s apparent that’s not going to happen before the end of the regular season.
It’s now believed the NHLPA would prefer to start negotiations following the end of the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs, in order to have as many players available as possible to take part in the talks.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, meanwhile, maintains it’s “business as usual” for the 30 NHL general managers, who can continue to operate this summer under the current CBA until its expiration on September 15th.

Oilers beat Predators 6-3
It doesn’t matter that the Nashville Predators are playoff bound, and that the Oilers are only playing out the end of the season, the Oilers seem to have the Predators’ number lately, every visit to Nashville makes the Preds’ fans cringe. For the Oilers, this may be a meaningless win, but it’s still a win and something that fans have been anxious to cheer for. During fall for Hall and arson for Larsson, it seemed wrong to cheer for wins; there was a high profile draft pick on the line. Even though the team is still cheering for draft picks, three first overall picks in a row seems wrong and a higher pick will certainly do.

Another visit to Pennsylvania, another 60 minutes of hockey spiralling out of control resulting in big numbers on the scoreboard. This time, though, those numbers didn’t work in the Winnipeg Jets’ favour, as they were doubled up 8-4 by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Bryan Little scored twice for the Jets, both off nice feeds from Andrew Ladd. Spencer Mahachek played well in just his second game for the Jets, picking up two helpers and finishing the game as one of the few Winnipeg skaters that wasn’t a minus player. Ben Maxwell did well enough after being called up to replace an injured Nik Antropov (who did not make the road trip).

Leafs Hold A “Heart-To-Heart Talk” After Losing To the Islanders
03/20/12 at 10:59 PM ET | Comments (0)
from Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun,
The boos finally began at the 13:56 of the third period, when Mississauga’s Matt Moulson put the New York Islanders ahead 3-2.
A few seconds later, a sporadic chant of “Fire Burkie” began.
And when Andy Frost announced: “Last minute of play in the game”, a cheer broke among the few fans left inside the Air Canada Centre.
And all this time we thought it was Ron Wilson’s fault.
The Leafs have three wins in 10 games since Randy Carlyle was hired on March 2 and some of the games have been ugly, their past two perhaps the worst of all — an 8-0 beating in Boston on Monday and a brutal performance against the mediocre New York Islanders on Tuesday, which saw the Leafs manage only 14 shots in a 5-2 loss (while giving up 34).
After the game, which ended at 9:26 p.m., the Leafs had — in goalie James Reimer’s words — a “heart-to-heart talk” inside the dressing room, before the media was finally allowed in.

Reaction To The Battle At MSG
03/20/12 at 08:11 PM ET | Comments (1)
from Chris Johnston of the CP at the Medicine Hat News,
Rugged Montreal Canadiens winger Ryan White watched the brawl off the opening faceoff between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils on television Monday night and called it “awesome.”
“You don’t see it very often. A lot of people don’t really like it, but I bet the people at Madison Square Garden liked it. I liked it,” White said. “I thought it was pretty cool. There were some big boys going at it, that’s for sure.”
The National Hockey League also apparently liked it, with the video of the donnybrook getting feature billing on the league’s website and no fines or suspensions issued.
Even as both Hockey Canada and Hockey USA look at ways to reduce fighting, at least in minor and junior hockey, there was not a hint of disapproval of the mass brawl in New York among NHL players and coaches Tuesday.
“You see that the game is changing,” said Montreal tough guy Brad Staubitz. “They’re talking about taking fighting out of the game in junior and everything.
“I don’t know if we’ll see (brawls) too often anymore, but it is an exciting part of hockey.”
Even a skill player liked the New York islanders’ John Tavares enjoyed the mayhem.
