Daniel Ryder Faces Armed Robbery Charges
01/07/10 at 12:38 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Telegram,
Daniel Ryder will remain in custody pending a psychiatric fitness assessment at the Waterford Hospital in St. John’s before returning to provincial court in Clarenville Jan. 14 to face charges related to an armed robbery in Bonavista on Tuesday.
Ryder, 22, the younger brother of the Boston Bruins’ hockey star Michael Ryder, turned himself into the RCMP in Bonavista Wednesday after police issued a news release asking for the public’s help to identify a suspect who allegedly committed an armed robbery at the Red Circle Convenience Store in the town.
Ryder is also facing charges of using a disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, and theft under $5,000.

2nd Half Questions
01/07/10 at 11:29 AM ET | Comments (0)
Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun answer some questions related to the 2nd half of the NHL season…
Which of these teams will most likely fade out of the playoff picture: Colorado, Phoenix or Nashville?
Burnside: I’m not sure any of them will, but I think the Preds are most susceptible to falling just below the Mendoza Line when the dust clears in mid-April. They are currently dealing with the loss of team goal-scoring leader Martin Erat and have historically struggled to score.
LeBrun: Keep an eye on the Avs. Hopefully I’m wrong, because I love the way coach Joe Sacco has this team playing, but I worry about the durability of twin 18-year-old centers Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly. Sacco’s system asks a lot of the centers. Craig Anderson’s numbers have dipped a bit after a torrid opening two months, and I think it’s because he’s been a bit overtaxed. The rest during the Olympic break should be beneficial to him.
What jersey will Ilya Kovalchuk be wearing at the end of the regular season?
Burnside: We’re guessing now it won’t be an Atlanta Thrashers jersey, so will go with a dark horse, the Philadelphia Flyers. Second choice? Chicago Blackhawks.
LeBrun: Just for kicks, how about the Montreal Canadiens?...

New Rookie Of The Year Leader
Blog: The Puck Stops Here By PuckStopsHere
01/07/10 at 10:22 AM ET | Comments (10)
In December, I picked John Tavares of the New York Islanders as the Calder Trophy leader. Although he remains the top scoring rookie this season (he has a one point lead over Niclas Bergfors and Matt Duchene), he has clearly slowed down a bit. In fact, Tavares has only one point (a goal vs. Toronto on December 23rd) since I made my selection. This scoring slump has allowed him to be caught in the rookie of the year race. He has been caught by Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres. Myers leads the Sabres in playing time. He has 23 points from defence in 42 games and sports a +9 +/- rating. This is very impressive play from the towering 6’8” 19 year old rookie. He is the current Calder Trophy leader.

GDT - Game #43: Red Wings at Kings (10:30)
Blog: Abel to Yzerman By Jeff OKWingnut

Five points out of the 8 spot, or 7 spot, or 6 spot . . .
6 Vancouver 43 gp, 26-16-1, 53 pts, Last 10 7-2-1
7 Los Angeles 43 gp, 25- 5-3, 53 pts, Home record 11-5-2, Last 10 5-5-0 (Won 3)
8 Nashville 43 gp, 25-15-3, 53 pts, Last 10 6-4-0
———————————————————————————————————
9 Detroit 42 gp, 21-15-6, 48 pts, Last 10 5-4-1
Five points doesn’t seem like alot, and DET has played one fewer game. But if you look at the respective records in the last 10 games, DET has lost ground to VAN (4 pts) and NSH (1 pt), and gained one meager point on LA.
It probably is too early to call this a must win, but maybe not. It certainly is an opportunity for DET to remove the “cone of shame” hanging around their necks after that debacle against the Ducks.
The good news, Zetterberg and Cleary will play tonight, and Howard is in net, if you are awake to see it.

International Games May No Longer Be Dominated By Canada
01/07/10 at 08:58 AM ET | Comments (13)
from Joe O’Connor of the National Post,
Canada’s 6-5 overtime loss to the United States in the gold-medal game at the world junior championship was a coin-toss, not a tragedy. Anything can happen in overtime. Except when it happens to be an American team that is doing the winning and the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner—on Canadian ice—it tends to sting. And this is one particular pain that could get worse, and much more common, with potentially no cure in sight.
Consider this: The night before the Americans claimed gold in Saskatoon, their under-17 national team did the same thing in Timmins, Ont, beating Team Ontario at the world hockey challenge. America’s women, meanwhile, have won three of the last four world championships by dispatching Canada in the gold-medal game. All that needs to happen now is some calamity in Vancouver, when the Canadian men face the United States, and Mr. Harper might reconvene parliament with a royal commission charged with examining why our game is no longer ours alone.

The Lightning bear watching in the second half. Vin Lecavalier has re-awakened and Marty St. Louis never stops hustling. If Ryan Malone gets on track, Tampa Bay will have a playoff team.

Kane With A Good Gesture
01/07/10 at 08:28 AM ET | Comments (7)
from David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune,
From the moment Kane saw the kid wearing his jersey at Fenway Park as part of the Jan. 1 ceremony unveiling the U.S. Olympic hockey team, he got an idea. Kane was traveling to St. Louis with the Hawks but felt so moved by the gesture that he immediately contacted front-office personnel to begin tracking down the boy’s name.
A few phone calls later, and Kane arranged through the family to sign the jersey Thursday so the kid would have more than a memory to mark the occasion of making Kane’s Olympic moment official.
“The whole thing was very cool,” Kane said.
In a sports town where life has been decidedly uncool lately, how nice to see a local hero embrace his status and exceed expectations as a person and player. On the current landscape of Chicago superstars as 2010 begins, there is Kane and there is everybody else.

Penguins Hope To Sign Letang & Gonchar
01/07/10 at 08:21 AM ET | Comments (7)
from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
General manager Ray Shero said yesterday that while he continues to negotiate with the agents for Gonchar, who can be unrestricted July 1, and fellow defenseman Kris Letang, who will be restricted if not re-signed by then, agreements are not near.
“[Talks] are kind of ongoing, I guess you could say,” Shero said. “Nothing is imminent on any front.”
He added that no date has been set to break off talks if they don’t yield an agreement.
“These things, hopefully, take care of themselves,” Shero said. “There’s certainly no deadline.
“We’re hoping we can retain both players. With Kris, hopefully it’s just a matter of time because [the Penguins can match any offer he would receive from another team], but you never know.”

Oilers Basically Out Of The Playoff Picture
01/07/10 at 08:15 AM ET | Comments (0)
from Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal,
Yes, it has been an embarrassing week and a costly, frustrating half-season for the Oilers, who cannot win for losing. They lost Tuesday to Phoenix in OT, Saturday in San Jose, Friday in the Saddledome and again in the court of public opinion after getting into a beef over a massive dinner bill at a Cowtown restaurant. Those headlines were unflattering and they will be written out of the playoffs soon enough, too.
They would have to go 25-9-5 or something similarly out of character, and still hope that all eight playoff-bound teams in the west played no better than .500 hockey until the end of the schedule, just to sneak in and offer themselves up as first-round hors d’oeuvres for San Jose.
It’s not a mathematical impossibility, but it’s pretty safe to say 39 hockey games stand between the Oilers and their first sanctioned golf games of the new decade.
