Coach Babcock Today

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Q. Pavel looked pretty good today. Is he pretty close or what do you think?

COACH BABCOCK: I don’t know. What we’ll do is we’ll go for the optional skate in the morning and see how he responded today and see how he felt.

I haven’t talked to him since he got off, and I haven’t talked to Pete. He was still out there well after I got off, so we’ll see how he is.

        Q. Maybe we’ll deal in the ifs. If he is available, how much of a difference does he make just in that they have Malkin and Crosby on different lines and he obviously gives you another pretty good shut down guy?

COACH BABCOCK: Well, he’s - I don’t know if he’s a shut down guy, I just think he’s a pretty good player, right. He’s a Hart Trophy candidate. He’s one of the best players in the world. Obviously, we’d like to have him. But it’s one of those injuries. You have some situations at Playoff time, and we have to find a way to overcome, we’ve done a good job.

Datsyuk Practicing

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Bruce MacLeod’s Twitter,

Pavel Datsyuk is on the ice right now at Red Wings’ practice.

added 2:20pm, via Bruce’s Twitter…

Datsyuk is practicing as though he’s playing Game 4, centering Filppula and Hossa.

added 2:31pm, Bruce continues to update…  Holmstrom & Rafalski not on the ice, but he does expect Rafalski to play.  No word on Homer but I do remember him sliding into the boards last night and favoring his left knee I believe.

Emery Just May Be Flyers Starting Goaltender

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly,

Barring a collapse in negotiations, the Flyers are expected to sign Ray Emery as their starting goalie for next season.

Several general managers at the Stanley Cup Final consider the matter a “done deal.”  Emery was Ottawa’s property until released by the Senators last June.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren declined to confirm what others are saying at the Cup Final.

“We’ve had conversations with his agent [J.P. Barry] about a lot of things,” Holmgren said. “But I’m not going to comment on our internal discussions of players.”

Coach Bylsma Today

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Q.      Talk about players, as Playoffs go on, having to do more and the competition becomes more key. Is that true for coaching? Do you have to do different things at this stage that maybe you didn’t have to do in the first round?

COACH BYLSMA: I think it often depends on your opponent. And there are coaches that like to make a lot of adjustments. There are coaches who, last night Zetterberg was definitely, obviously coming on the ice and off the ice at key moments trying to get different match?ups. That poses a different situation than some of the other things early on. I don’t think it would be ?? I don’t think it’s just because it’s the Finals. I think it’s because it’s Mike Babcock and the Red Wings.

So each series is a little bit different. And this one is presenting different situations.

The Value Of Dwayne Roloson

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

The NHL’s free-agent doors swing wide open in 28 days, but goalie Dwayne Roloson still hasn’t received a contract offer from the Edmonton Oilers.

Roloson’s age obviously is a factor—he turns 40 in October—so the Oilers may not be willing to pitch anything more than a one-year deal.

“We haven’t started talking at all,” Roloson said in a telephone interview on Tuesday. “But they’ve had other issues to get resolved ... lots to do with hiring coaches and firing coaches.”

Oilers general manager GM Steve Tambellini, who attended meetings in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, said the two sides would begin serious negotiations on a new contract very soon. But how many years the Oilers want to offer and how much money is available is anybody’s guess.

The Cup Is Available

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,

Three reasons Detroit will win

The wildcard, Pavel Datsyuk. Datsyuk skated Tuesday morning and Babcock said Detroit’s injured Hart Trophy candidate could be ready for Thursday’s Game 4. His return would tilt a tightly contested series in Detroit’s favor.

Three reasons Pittsburgh will win

Crosby’s quiet determination. He might not be piling up points, but the Penguins feed off Crosby’s drive to win his first Stanley Cup. “He’s an on-ice leader,” teammate Jordan Staal said. “He doesn’t say a whole lot, but when he does everyone is listening.”
