Tomorrow is a doubleheader, featuring Sabres vs. Capitals at 7:00pm and Coyotes vs. Kings at 10:30pm.

Leafs Hands Are Tied

There’s no doubt Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson could have moved Bryan McCabe last Thursday.
The fact he didn’t do so indicates that he sees McCabe as a part of the Leafs’ future....
But this is Gary’s Brave New World, and although the Leafs have lots of money, spend a lot of money, and are willing to spend a lot more money, they’re not allowed to do so.

General manager Mike O’Connell has been an excellent trader in his tenure as architect of the Boston Bruins. But he’s been a poor architect, and now that the Bruins’ post-Olympics record of 1-6 has taken them out of the playoff chase, it’s time for a change....
This can’t continue after Jacobs shouted from the rooftops his allegiance to Bruins fans during and after the lockout. He’s got luxury-suite holders and a season-ticket base to think about at a time when his hockey operation needs a fresh start.

What Stinks

The Islanders had a big 3-1 win in Boston on Saturday. Back home at the old arena in Uniondale, it was a different matter.
A sewage pipe burst in the Islanders’ dressing room at approximately 7:45 on Saturday night. It is the second time broken pipes have caused damage to the Islanders’ room in the Nassau Coliseum in the last year. In August the damage was major. This time, the damage was devastating.

Tribute To Hockey Moms

Blackhawk forwards Mark Bell and Michael Holmqvist and goaltender Craig Anderson are among the more than 200 NHL players who will take part in the first-ever “Tribute To Hockey Moms” at 10:00 a.m. on March 17, 2006 at the United Center.
During the Blackhawks morning practice in preparation for that evening’s game against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Anderson, Bell and Holmqvist will use pink hockey sticks carrying the breast cancer research logo. The specially designed TPS sticks will then be autographed and later auctioned off at various local and national fund raising events that support breast cancer research.

Coach Ruff Asks For Prayers

The Buffalo Sabres could be without coach Lindy Ruff in the coming weeks while he and his wife tend to their 11-year-old daughter, Madeleine, who has an unidentified mass on her brain.
Ruff had been mysteriously absent in recent days while attending to “family matters.” He skipped a news conference Thursday night following the Sabres’ victory over Tampa Bay and did not show up for practice Friday, which led to speculation as the Sabres prepared for the Philadelphia Flyers.
“There’s no need to guess,” Ruff said Saturday afternoon, before the Sabres took the ice against the Flyers. “It’s something a lot of people have dealt with. Really, all we ask is that you say a prayer.”

The Forum was so much more than a building. It was warm. It was caring. It had character, far more than the elephant-sized cold lump of concrete and glass that is the Bell Centre, where loud is good and outrageous ear-shattering music is better - all in the guise of marketing.
The reality is that nothing can replace the Forum, because it was much more than a building for so many of us. It was a second home to the people who worked there, to the well-dressed men bobbing up and down under their fedoras and to the women wearing their Sunday best on so many Saturday nights.

Hurricanes Among The Best

So what do you do: remain angry and bitter about the Cole hit? Or rejoice because Hurricanes management found a way to at least replace Cole’s goals with a steady veteran hand?
Go with the latter. It’s much more becoming.
You want to be a big boy? Then stop acting like a petulant child.
The Hurricanes are on top of the NHL. Any list of the NHL young stars includes Cole and Eric Staal. Rutherford is being hailed as a genius. Laviolette is a brilliant tactician and motivator.
Stop behaving like the Detroit Red Wings stole your milk money and when you complained about it, commissioner Gary Bettman said “Tough. Why don’t you just get out of the way? You can’t play with them.”

Looking Forword To Next Year

The positive energy and optimism surrounding the Panthers and their future has been almost palpable since the team took the significant step of re-signing Olli Jokinen and Chris Gratton last Thursday.
Pardon the pinch of pessimism, but why?
The team sits 13th in its 15-team conference, ranks last in the East in scoring, and its goaltender is on track to break records for shots against and saves that he set two years ago.
