Blog: The Malik Report By George Malik

Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall landed a clean butt check on Ales Hemsky of the Edmonton Oilers. Kronwall was bloodied by Corey Potter and Hemsky had to go to the “quiet room” but has nothing more than a little cut on his upper lip—and Kronwall never left his feet:

Rinaldo Fined $5K For Two Incidents Today

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

NEW YORK (February 4, 2012)—Philadelphia Flyers center Zac Rinaldo has been fined a total of $5,000 as a result of two separate incidents during NHL Game No. 768 against the New Jersey Devils Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Rinaldo was fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for his late hit on Devils center Jacob Josefson at 12:51 of the second period. Rinaldo received a minor penalty for interference.

Rinaldo also was fined the maximum $2,500 for his dangerous trip of Devils left wing Zach Parise after the whistle at 11:38 of the third period. No penalty was assessed on the play.

You can watch the trip here if you missed it earlier.

And with Carolina’s victory over the Kings…

Blog: The Upper Canadien By The Upper Canadien

As of 9:26 EST, the Montreal Canadiens are alone in the basement of the Eastern Conference.

It’s dark down here. And lonely.

But seriously, how could anything go worse this year? A lost season, indeed. Will it be enough to cost jobs/cause trades in the near future? I have to believe it does.

There’s bad, and then there is this. Woe, Montreal.

Trade Rumors Heat Up

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

• A looming unrestricted free agent on July 1 with 16 goals and 18 assists in 51 games with the Oilers heading into Saturday, Smyth is going to have to decide whether he wants to head to a contender before the clock strikes zero on Feb. 27.

Sources say there’s at least four teams — including the Rangers, Sharks, Bruins and Wings — that have expressed interest with Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini….

• Confirm or deny: The cellar-dwelling Blue Jackets may finally be ready to accept reality and they could be willing to deal captain Rick Nash. If that’s the case, they’re going to want a big return: A top young player, a prospect and a first-round pick. The Rangers and Kings are interested. But Nash’s $7.8-million cap hit through 2018 is going to make it difficult for that to happen. Sounds like the kind of deal that needs to be made in the off-season. The first priority for the organization is to get C Jeff Carter moved. The Leafs certainly have interest.

• Several teams — including San Jose, Detroit, Boston and the Rangers — are waiting with baited breath to see what RW Teemu Selanne is going to do at the trade deadline. He has a no-movement clause, but sources say all four teams have expressed interest with Anaheim GM Bob Murray and are waiting to hear if Selanne, 42, has any desire to win one more Stanley Cup before the end of his career….

• This won’t go away: The talk is the Leafs are willing to offer up either C Joe Colborne or C Nazem Kadri to the Hurricanes for C Tuomu Ruutu. Carolina GM Jim Rutherford has been telling teams a deal is imminent. The Sharks are making a hard pitch as well, but GM Doug Wilson doesn’t want to pay the high asking price. Neither do the Senators.

So Far 4 In 2, Why Not 6 in 3?

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

Yes, the Wings have won their first two games of their western Canada road tour and play the final game tonight in Edmonton before taking a detour through Phoenix on Monday before returning to Detroit for a Wednesday game against these same Oilers.

Before this goes an futher, Paul here, assuming IwoCPO is still without web access. (If he does appear before the puck drops, well, you know what to do.)

You know the Oilers plan to pepper Conklin with shots so the first ten minutes of he game are important for the Wings to stick to their game plan.

Tight defense, take advantage of mistakes by the Oilers and head to Phoenix with a win, any way they can.

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Kovalchuk landed a right to the face of Schenn, brining him to his knees.

No penalty on Rinaldo. My mistake, he did get 2 for tripping.

Rangers Need to Set The Pace Against the Flyers

Blog: Goal Line Report By Patrick Hoffman

From Brian Monzo at CBSNewYork.com/WFAN.com:

-Start the game by taking the body. This really goes for any game, but the Rangers need to expect the Flyers to come out angry since they’ve been handled by New York so far this season.  Whether it be Brandon Prust or Ryan Callahan, someone needs to set the tone early.  If it’s the Flyers doing it, the Rangers could be in for a long afternoon.

-Get the defense involved in the offense.  Since the Rangers’ offense is pretty spread around, success has come in games when their defensemen have scored goals.  Michael Del Zotto and Anton Stralman both can get involved when need be, but Ryan McDonagh and Marc Staal should both be joining the rush as much as possible.  Fortunately for the Rangers, their goaltending has been extraordinary enough that if this backfires, Henrik Lundqvist should be able to handle any odd man rushes.

Red Wings-Oilers game-day updates: good Howard news is worth jumping the gun

Blog: The Malik Report By George Malik

Updated 8x with some pregame reading at 9:25 PM: Thus far there are scant updates regarding the Edmonton Oilers team the Detroit Red Wings will have their hands full tangling with tonight (10 PM EST, FSD/CBC/NHL Network US [CBC feed]/WXYT), but dammit, there’s more than enough reason to jump the gun on the game-day update thread, via the Free Press’s Helene St. James...
