The Red Wings and the NHL will shortly make an announcement regarding the 2013 Winter Classic in the first of 2 press conferences to be held today. The NHL will make an announcement at Comerica Park today at 10:30 AM and at Michigan Stadium at 1:15 PM. This live stream should work:

The Rangers Could Own The City

The Rangers may skate under the radar through most of the calendar, but they have the pedigree that grants them the ability to own this city the way they did when they won it all in 1994 and even when they went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1979.

The way they have a chance to own this city this spring.

Look, this is not a powerhouse team. This is not a group glittering with stars like the one featuring Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, Mike Richter and Adam Graves that put an end to the 54-year Stanley Cup drought by looking history in the eye until it blinked.

But it is a team that is greater than the sum of its parts operating in a sport that rewards fabric more than any other. There are talents who do get their name above the title on the marquee, specifically Henrik Lundqvist and Marian Gaborik, and that is required of teams that go all the way, but more than the commitment to grind on every shift, to block every shot and to finish and play through every check, there is the commitment to one another.

Kiprusoff Wins Game #300 With Saves Like This

Kiprusoff shone brightest in the final minutes of his 34-save outing, which included a highlight-reel stop in which he was on his stomach but able to catch a puck with his feet after it rolled down his back.

Talk about a great way to reach a milestone.

“It’s nice. I try not to think about it too much, but it’s there now. And that was a huge win for us,” he said. “It’s not the easiest building to win in, but it’s not a big thing for me it’s against San Jose.”

Blueshirts Looking for Offense

While the New York Rangers may have gotten screwed out of picking up at least a point against the New Jersey Devils in their 1-0 loss on Tuesday night, it still does not change the fact that this team is currently having trouble scoring goals.

Yes, the team put four in on Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Flyers but before that and right now, the offense has been kept quiet. As of right now, Rangers’ forwards Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan seem like the only two players that are consistently generating scoring chances.

However, guys like Derek Stepan, Brad Richards, Brian Boyle and others are struggling to score goals. Prior to these last few weeks, the Rangers had scoring depth and right now, it appears to be missing.

When this happens, it puts a ton of pressure on the team’s goaltenders Henrik Lundqvist and Martin Biron. It is like the goaltenders have to be as close to perfect as possible in order to win a hockey game.

Despite the Red Wings and NHL’s insistence that an announcement to be made at Comerica Park at 10:30 AM this morning—which NHL.com and the Wings will happen to stream online—and a parallel announcement to be made at Michigan Stadium at 1:15 may or may not have to do anything with slate of outdoor games to be played at Comerica Park and Michigan Stadium, the University of Michigan’s Board of Regents approved a $3 million rental (not including some sort of donation to the U’s scholarship fund) of the Big House by the NHL on Wednesday, and we all know that the NHL is going to confirm that the Detroit Red Wings will host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2013 Winter Classic when this mysterious “major announcement” is made.

The Detroit News’s Joanne C. Gerstner gets down to brass tacks regarding the event’s details as conveniently discussed by University of Michigan athletic director David Brandon (and I’ve added some known details in parentheses)...

It is expected that an outdoor rink will be built at Comerica Park, and games and events would take place there leading up to the Jan. 1 Wings game. The only event at Michigan Stadium would be the Wings game; Brandon said the game would begin at noon.

A source told The Detroit News that the Comerica Park schedule would include:

Thursday, Dec. 27: AHL game [between the Toronto Marlies and Grand Rapids Griffins]

Friday and Saturday, Dec. 28-29: Great Lakes Invitational games [between the University of Michigan, Michigan Technological University, Michigan State University and Western Michigan University]

Sunday, Dec. 30: OHL game[s between the Windsor Spitfires and Saginaw Spirit, and the Plymouth Whalers and London Knights]

Monday, Dec. 31: Wings-Maple Leafs alumni game

Red Wings-Oilers wrap-up and overnight report: Miller,  Zetterberg help Wings in Homer’s 999th game

For some mysterious reason which has something to do with parallel announcements at Comerica Park (which will be streamed online at NHL.com and DetroitRedWings.com) at 10:30 AM on Thursday and Michigan Stadium at 1:15 PM on Thursday, the Detroit Red Wings won’t practice on Thursday, but they earned the day off to promote the 2013 Winter Clas…I mean engage in a “major announcement” via a slightly sloppy but no less effective 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night.

By holding off Sam Gagner and the Oilers, the Red Wings reclaimed a 3-point lead over the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference standings and 5-point leads over the Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues, they extended their home-ice winning streak to 18 games, and, mostly, they overcame heavy legs and heavy brains in a gritty effort which allowed the Wings to shake off their 5-game road swing while snapping a two-game losing streak.

The Grand Rapids Griffins are hosting a special game to benefit cancer research on February 16th:

Nothing rhymes with “purple,” but nearly everything at Van Andel Arena will be in sync with the color associated with cancer survivors on Saturday, Feb. 18, when the Grand Rapids Griffins host their first-ever “Purple Game” to benefit the Van Andel Institute (VAI).

Oilers lose 4-2 to Red Wings
At least Sam Gagner has been on fire lately. With two goals from Gagner, the Oilers may have been shutout by the hockey giant Red Wings. But, thankfully for the Oilers, Gagner has been incredible lately. Incredible enough to make many forget then he only had 5 goals up until a week ago. Now, he has 12.

Oil Kings Topple Hitmen 9-5
