Gilmour Belongs In The HHOF
11/06/09 at 08:02 AM ET | Comments (0)
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
The Hall of Fame case for Doug Gilmour is much like the player himself. It darts back and forth, is statistical yet empirical, creative but contradictory, and, in the end, absolutely convincing.
No matter what criteria is chosen by the Hockey Hall of Fame committee—Gilmour doesn’t just meet the standards, he exceeds them.
How best to measure a Hall of Fame player? A Hall of Famer must be exceptional, even if there are too many hockey examples to the contrary. A Hall of Famer must have a playoff resume. A Hall of Famer must make his teams and his teammates better. A Hall of Famer must be a player you can’t take your eyes off and must be at his best when it matters most.

Blackhawks Have Holes In Their Game
11/06/09 at 07:49 AM ET | Comments (0)
from Tim Sassone of Between The Circles,
What’s happened to the offense?
The Hawks have scored 11 goals in the last six games and not more than 3 in a game since Oct. 14. And it’s not all because the power play is 2-for-32 after a 0-for-6 performance in Thursday’s 3-1 loss to the Coyotes.
Only Patrick Sharp (6) and Dustin Byfuglien (5) have scored more than 4 goals.
Patrick Kane needs to step up. Byfuglien has looked more like the inconsistent Byfuglien from last season. Sharp is up and down. Andrew Ebbett is not cutting it by any means and could be back on waivers soon.

Now That Is What I Call A Wedding Reception
11/05/09 at 06:42 PM ET | Comments (0)
from George Parros at the Fabulous Forum,
My wife and I made sure to put our own stamp on the weekend event. I decided to have a barbershop quartet perform before the ceremony. I have always loved that stuff—maybe it’s from watching too much “Family Guy.” We decided on having a country band play at the reception, and for a surprise, Tiffany (my wife) hired cigar rollers for all our guests to enjoy. The following day, we went to a local water park because, wedding weekend or not, who doesn’t love water slides?

“I had the most fun in my career in St. Louis. We had (only) two married guys on the team, a good bunch of young kids going out and having fun on the ice. We played hard, on and off the ice. St. Louis is an unbelievably good city.”

Big Night In LA
11/05/09 at 06:09 PM ET | Comments (3)
from Helene Elliott at the Fabulous Forum,
No matter how often the Kings said they’re not approaching tonight’s game against the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins as a gauge of their own progress—and they’ve said it often the last few days, including after Thursday’s game-day skate—you know they’re geared up for this. And they should be.
Defenseman Rob Scuderi, who left the Penguins to sign with the Kings as a free agent over the summer, said Wednesday that the Kings are hoping to be like the Penguins someday. So why not measure yourself up against the Penguins tonight?
That’s not to say the Kings can—or should—copy the Penguins’ game plan. The Kings don’t have the top-to-bottom skill to do that. But persistence isn’t measured in point totals. A poised, smart, disciplined approach is their best chance at competing well.

You’d Think A Team Could Use Peca
11/05/09 at 03:10 PM ET | Comments (2)
from Jim Kelley of Sportsnet,
Sources tell me that Peca had a chat with Sabres GM Darcy Regier and that would be a good fit given that he’s put down roots in Western New York what with a home and having his kids in school there, but Buffalo’s roster appears set at least for now. There were rumors that a team in the West had some interest but it was simply too far away. The Philadelphia Flyers were rumored to be interested but they have cap issues. Toronto is close by and the GTA is where Peca was born, but the Leafs haven’t revisited and even if they did it’s not exactly a Cup contending team.
As a result his options are limited, but that’s not as big a problem as you might think.
“I don’t think I’d be comfortable with the decision of having it be over,” he said. “Right now things are different, but I think it would be difficult to concede that this is the end. I still think there’s a fit out there somewhere.”
