I’ll be the reaction at NHL HQ was more than “disappointing”, but unfortunately there’s nothing the league can do about it because of the contract with NBC. The network calls the tune, not the league.
Listen, Hockey fans. We have to realize what our sport is. This is a bidness. The Preakness is a premium event and should get preference.
Here’s a thought, start the game at 12:30 or 1PM and don’t worry about the west coast of either country. It’s a eastern series anyway.
I’ve got a better idea, Get the NBC the hell out of hockey!!!!!!!!!!!! As for starting the game early, any hockey fan wants to watch both games because they like the game, not just the individual teams.
Message to the NHL:
You are risking losing the fans you already have at the expense of trying to bring in new ones. Is that really a risk worth taking? Be careful what you wish for.
Yep kdog, that would have been the logical choice.
I wonder if NBC had control of the starting time too?
Guys, it’s obvious NBC calls the shots regarding scheduling of games (regular and postseason) they carry, including timings and matchups.
I can understand the frustration but the NHL won’t be ending their relationship with NBC anytime soon. No other major network wants them, and the NHL is desperate to keep their product on a major network, even if the contract screws them out of millions.
NBC calls the tune. The NHL has to dance to it.
The NBC telecast and announcers are pretty good. I’m not an HD guy so that doesn’t affect me. This is a revenue sharing(no rights-fee) arrangement. Maybe put the game on MSNBC or CNBC. But I have no problem with it.

If the contract allowed them to pull the plug after 3 hours, then why the hell did they take it off air at 2:40? By my calculation that is 2 hours and 40 minutes!
