Talking about the Red Wings-Maple Leafs Winter Classic announcement to come

Blog: The Malik Report By George Malik

Despite the Red Wings and NHL’s insistence that an announcement to be made at Comerica Park at 10:30 AM this morning—which NHL.com and the Wings will happen to stream online—and a parallel announcement to be made at Michigan Stadium at 1:15 may or may not have to do anything with slate of outdoor games to be played at Comerica Park and Michigan Stadium, the University of Michigan’s Board of Regents approved a $3 million rental (not including some sort of donation to the U’s scholarship fund) of the Big House by the NHL on Wednesday, and we all know that the NHL is going to confirm that the Detroit Red Wings will host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2013 Winter Classic when this mysterious “major announcement” is made.

The Detroit News’s Joanne C. Gerstner gets down to brass tacks regarding the event’s details as conveniently discussed by University of Michigan athletic director David Brandon (and I’ve added some known details in parentheses)...

It is expected that an outdoor rink will be built at Comerica Park, and games and events would take place there leading up to the Jan. 1 Wings game. The only event at Michigan Stadium would be the Wings game; Brandon said the game would begin at noon.

A source told The Detroit News that the Comerica Park schedule would include:

Thursday, Dec. 27: AHL game [between the Toronto Marlies and Grand Rapids Griffins]

Friday and Saturday, Dec. 28-29: Great Lakes Invitational games [between the University of Michigan, Michigan Technological University, Michigan State University and Western Michigan University]

Sunday, Dec. 30: OHL game[s between the Windsor Spitfires and Saginaw Spirit, and the Plymouth Whalers and London Knights]

Monday, Dec. 31: Wings-Maple Leafs alumni game

Red Wings-Oilers wrap-up and overnight report: Miller,  Zetterberg help Wings in Homer’s 999th game

Blog: The Malik Report By George Malik

For some mysterious reason which has something to do with parallel announcements at Comerica Park (which will be streamed online at NHL.com and DetroitRedWings.com) at 10:30 AM on Thursday and Michigan Stadium at 1:15 PM on Thursday, the Detroit Red Wings won’t practice on Thursday, but they earned the day off to promote the 2013 Winter Clas…I mean engage in a “major announcement” via a slightly sloppy but no less effective 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night.

By holding off Sam Gagner and the Oilers, the Red Wings reclaimed a 3-point lead over the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference standings and 5-point leads over the Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues, they extended their home-ice winning streak to 18 games, and, mostly, they overcame heavy legs and heavy brains in a gritty effort which allowed the Wings to shake off their 5-game road swing while snapping a two-game losing streak.

On a charitable Griffins game, a charitable Red Wings donut and a charitable sushi roll

Blog: The Malik Report By George Malik

Of very important charitable Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins-related note over the next few weeks:

The Grand Rapids Griffins are hosting a special game to benefit cancer research on February 16th:

Nothing rhymes with “purple,” but nearly everything at Van Andel Arena will be in sync with the color associated with cancer survivors on Saturday, Feb. 18, when the Grand Rapids Griffins host their first-ever “Purple Game” to benefit the Van Andel Institute (VAI).

When fans arrive for the 7 p.m. contest against the Peoria Rivermen, they’ll notice a host of purple touches that will create awareness and unique experiences throughout the night, including:

Doubled Down Again

Blog: Oil Patch By Lisa McRitchie

Oilers lose 4-2 to Red Wings
At least Sam Gagner has been on fire lately. With two goals from Gagner, the Oilers may have been shutout by the hockey giant Red Wings. But, thankfully for the Oilers, Gagner has been incredible lately. Incredible enough to make many forget then he only had 5 goals up until a week ago. Now, he has 11.

Oil Kings Topple Hitmen 9-5

Blog: Oil Patch By Lisa McRitchie

The Oil Kings have taken all three games against the Hitmen at home, and after falling behind the Hitmen early in the first period, it looked as though the Hitmen may take all of their home games. But, hockey is a funny sport, and you often need to see the full sixty minutes.

Crosby’s Injury Has No Easy Diagnosis

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Stephania Bell of ESPN,

So why is this injury, which sounds at once benign (soft tissue) and sinister (neck), so difficult to grasp? And why, if it isn’t particularly serious, is it proving to be such a hurdle for Crosby to overcome? The answers are simultaneously straightforward and complex.

Some athletic injuries are just easy to comprehend. Take, for instance, the hamstring strain. This is a classic example of a soft-tissue injury (a term typically used to refer to injury of a muscle, tendon or ligament). Hamstring strains can be mild or severe. At best, an athlete might describe nothing more than “tightness” or “pulling,” and would recover in a matter of days. In more serious cases, the athlete might feel a “pop” or experience a “tearing” sensation while collapsing in obvious pain. If the athlete was unable to return to play for multiple weeks—even months—after such an injury, it might be frustrating but most would understand. And it would not surprise anyone if the biggest concern was whether returning too soon could lead to reinjury.

But when the injury feels less familiar (as is the case with Crosby’s) and the soft-tissue injury is located in that no-man’s land of the neck (where there are very important things like the spinal cord, discs, nerves and vertebrae), it somehow casts a shadow of a far more serious condition.

The reality is that there are very reasonable comparisons between soft-tissue injuries in any part of the body. Just as a hamstring injury is a soft tissue injury of the thigh, an injury to the muscles, tendons or ligaments of the cervical spine is a soft tissue injury of the neck. Soft tissue, when damaged, bleeds to varying degrees, resulting in pain and inflammation in the injured area, whether it’s the thigh or the neck.

Pick Six: Thursday February 9

Blog: The Goods on Fantasy Hockey By Ian Gooding

I’ll kick off the Pick Six for Thursday with a list of confirmed starting goalies, courtesy of Goalie Post: Scott Clemmensen, FLA; Cory Schneider, VAN; Leland Irving, CGY; Johan Hedberg, NJ. The other goalies listed have not been confirmed, but they might be wise starts given recent play and matchups.

Evgeni Nabokov, G, NYI – start
Avoiding Islanders goalies may now officially be a thing of the past. Nabby has won six of his last seven starts, including a 1-0 shootout shutout against the Flyers on Tuesday. The punchless Canadiens could provide an even easier test on Thursday. Keep in mind that his value for the remainder of the season is very difficult to project. The Islanders may decide to trade him to a contender, who may employ him as a backup.

The Schenn Brothers Together In Philadelphia?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,

Luke Schenn has a natural inclination to watch out for his kid brother Brayden.

And while that task would be a lot easier if both were on the same bench for the Philadelphia Flyers, that’s not quite the close proximity that Luke is thinking of right now. While gainfully employed by the Maple Leafs, there continues to be speculation Luke will somehow join Brayden in orange and black by the Feb. 27 trade deadline, if not elsewhere.

Something with the Leafs and Flyers was cooking a few weeks ago for forward James van Riemsdyk, before the Flyer winger suffered a concussion. He remains out of their lineup, while Philly is still looking for depth on defence after losing Chris Pronger.

For Thursday at least, the Schenns will be on opposite sides of the Wells Fargo Center. The six-foot, 200-pound Brayden’s place on the Flyers was unclear in the first meeting back in November.

“Knock on wood, he’s playing (regularly) there now and he’s healthy,” Luke said. “That’s good to see. I’m excited to be going down there and looking forward to having dinner with him (Wednesday night).”

continued

note 11:55pm, The original title was a human error by me, I had Toronto instead of Philadelphia.  Sorry for getting Leafs fans excited.

Red Wings-Oilers quick take: brain cramps don’t impede Wings, who will be without Cleary for a bit

Blog: The Malik Report By George Malik

Updated with lots of evening reading at 11:13 PM: The Detroit Red Wings’ 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers was anything but pretty, at least in terms of the mistakes made by both teams.

Perhaps it was a case of heavy road legs and slightly distracted brains given tomorrow’s “important announcements” at Comerica Park and Michigan Stadium, but the Wings managed to take seven penalties, blow a 2-0 lead, lose Danny Cleary to a lower-body injury (Mike Babcock said Cleary will have his cortisone shot tomorrow to alleviate the issues in his left knee, and Jan Mursak will play on Friday: edit/update MLive’s Ansar Khan is confirming this as well) on a hit by Ben Eager which so preoccupied the Wings that the Oilers were able to score on the resulting play…

But at home, anyway, when the Wings stagger, they dust themselves off, get right back up and slowly but steadily right their ship, and they earned their 18th straight home win because, as the gentleman in a commercial most of you are too young to remember used to say, “They earned it.”
