Just Another Game For The Wings?
02/11/12 at 11:18 PM ET | Comments (0)
from Brian Hedger at NHL.com,
The purists have already spoken up.
They say that even if the Detroit Red Wings beat the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night at Joe Louis Arena for their 20th straight victory on home ice – tying the NHL record shared by the 1929-30 Boston Bruins and 1975-76 Flyers – it should come with an asterisk.
They argue that because neither of those old Bruins and Flyers teams had the advantage of winning games in overtime or shootouts, their home winning streaks are still more impressive and more “legit” than the current run the League-leading Red Wings are riding.
If that logic bothers the Wings, however, it’s near-impossible to tell – not because they’re so focused on joining the NHL’s history book yet again, but because they seem so nonchalant about the whole ordeal.

Hockey Talk In the Middle Of February

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
• My Leaf Alumni team for the Comerica Park game has to include: Goalies: Curtis Joseph, Ed Belfour, Mike Palmateer; Defence: Salming, Todd Gill, Dave Ellett, Jim McKenny, Al Iafrate, Bryan McCabe and if he’s able, Brian Glennie. Forwards: Gilmour, Sundin, Clark, Steve Thomas, Darcy Tucker, Gary Roberts, John Anderson, Vince Damphousse, Tie Domi, Rick Vaive, Bill Derlago, Sittler, Lanny McDonald and if they’re up to it, Frank Mahovlich, Ron Ellis, Paul Henderson and Eddie Shack. And the elephant in the room, as always: What do you do with Keon?
• A hockey quandary: If his last name is Hainsey, what’s his nickname?
• One of the reasons HBO hasn’t committed to a Winter Classic 24/7 series for next season is the NHL hasn’t committed to a season.

Garrioch Rumors
02/11/12 at 10:40 PM ET | Comments (0)
from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
• While it’s a long way from being reality because there’s a negotiation for a CBA ahead, sources say several GMs have asked the NHL to consider a one-time amnesty clause in the next agreement to buy out one contract that wouldn’t have a cap hit….
• If the Rangers are going to deal for Columbus RW Rick Nash — and sources say GM New York Glen Sather is interested — it’s going to come with a big asking price. The word is the Blue Jackets may demand C Brandon Dubinsky, prospect C Chris Kreider from Boston College and a No. 1 pick. Kreider was New York’s No. 1 pick in the 2009 NHL draft. The talk in Columbus is Nash may waive his no-movement clause to get a deal done.
• The Oilers were trying to move D Andy Sutton, but his agent, Pat Morris, was in Ottawa Saturday to see if he could get a one-year contract extension done with the Oilers.
• There’s a lot of pressure on Chicago coach Joel Quenneville to get the slumping Blackhawks turned around. GM Stan Bowman is trying to find a second-line centre and blueliner before the deadline. The word is Bowman is interested in Buffalo C Derek Roy. He’s not big, but Roy would bea nice fit with the ’Hawks.

Pens Thrash Jets 8-5
Blog: Benny and the Jets By BMS
02/11/12 at 05:15 PM ET | Comments (1)
Tim Stapleton, Kyle Wellwood, and the Penguins’ Jordan Staal all drew back in to their respective lineups on Saturday afternoon, and each factored into the scoresheet. Having said that, it wasn’t hard to pick up a goal or assist in this game, as the Winnipeg Jets fell 8-5 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Consol Energy Center.
Evgeni Malkin had five points as Ondrej Pavelec had one of his trademark stinker games – these types of performances by him are less frequent as of late but clearly still lurk in the shadows. Granted, he faced 39 shots, but he probably should have been pulled at the end of the second period at the latest, when the Jets were down 5-3.

Pääjärvi Scores!

Oilers beat Senators 4-3 in Overtime
Finally. That has to be what was on Magnus Pääjärvi’s mind as he looked to the sky, his shoulders finally relaxed. It took 35 NHL games, but Paajarvi has scored his first NHL goal of the season and hopefully now, more will follow. You never know what will spark offensive offence or strings of goals, just ask Edmonton Oiler Sam Gagner.

All Joel Quenneville
02/11/12 at 04:52 PM ET | Comments (1)
from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,
In the midst of the Blackhawks’ current nine-game road trip, during which they lost five consecutive games (dropping seven straight overall), the Tribune sat down with coach Joel Quenneville for a exclusive interview touching on subjects ranging from the team’s recent poor play to the current state of the roster, the pressure to win, his health, the goaltending and individual players.
Do you have the goaltending to win the Cup?
Absolutely. I like our goaltending. (Corey) Crawford last year had a special year. This year, his sophomore year, he hasn’t been as consistent or at that level but he has played some strong games for us. His goaltending hasn’t been the problem.
Ray (Emery), every game he has given us a chance. He has done a good job.
How’s the morale in the room?
Nobody’s happy. Angry sometimes could be the word. Frustrated, disappointed and sometimes quiet. Whether your heads are down or up there has to be some confidence quietly inside us all that we want to be out there and doing the right things. We want to be put in situations where you can excel. We want to encourage offensive plays and doing the right things.
Managing the puck in the right areas is what we want to continue to do. We were going along very confidently at times thinking everything was good. This should definitely get our attention to play the right way, which we have to do.

Rangers’ Best Players Come Through in Win Over the Flyers
Blog: Goal Line Report By Patrick Hoffman
02/11/12 at 03:41 PM ET | Comments (0)
When it comes to any professional sport, you always want the best players on your team to play like the best and come up big when they need to.
This happened for the New York Rangers this afternoon in their 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center. For the Rangers, it was their fifth straight victory over the Flyers this season.
The reason why the Rangers came away with the victory this afternoon is because their big-time players came through. For starters, the team captain, Ryan Callahan, scored a hat trick. Callahan now has 21 goals on the season.
Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards also had big games for the Blueshirts. Marian Gaborik picked-up a goal and three assists for four points while Richards also had three assists in the game.
Other forwards that came up big for the Rangers were Derek Stepan (2 assists) and Artem Anisimov (1 goal). Anisimov has really picked-up his game since being reunited with Stepan and Gaborik and now has 5 points (1 goal and 4 assists) in his last four games.
