from Brahm Resnik of KPNX News,

The Biased Canadian Media that Coyotes fans love to hate stirred the pot again Saturday night.

ESPN’s Pierre Lebrun told “Hockey Night in Canada” viewers that Jerry Reinsdorf, the Coyotes’ one-time savior in bankruptcy court, was back in the game, elbowing aside the Ice Edge investors who’ve been negotiating to buy the team from the NHL.

I had been hearing the same thing in recent days from sources I’ve been talking to for more than a year on this story.

Here’s what Ice Edge CEO Daryl Jones had to say about a Reinsdorf rerun:

“Jerry Reinsdorf would be an incredible owner in the National Hockey League. My sense from his public statements is he’s not interested in the Coyotes. The fact that he’s even rumored to be interested validates our (interest).”

Do You Consider Pronger A Norris Candidate?

from Wayne Fish of PhillyBurbs,

Earning consideration for the Norris Trophy as hockey’s best defenseman is nothing new for Chris Pronger.

The Flyers’ backliner has won one – 1999-‘00 – and been a finalist a number of other times.

At 35, Pronger is still going strong. In his first season with the Flyers, he’s put together one of his finest campaigns.

He’s tied for third among NHL defensemen with 52 points (the first Flyer defenseman to hit the 50-point plateau since Eric Desjardins in 1999-’00), third in plus-minus (plus-22) and third in ice time (25:54).

But perhaps most of all, he’s made a good young defenseman, 25-year-old Matt Carle, even better.

While the Wings lost a game they should have won against the Oilers this week, the Pens had similar problems with a team they should have beaten yesterday, the Hurricanes. Now I don’t feel as bad knowing that every team has trouble bringing the proper intensity to games facing the bottom dwellers.

Today, I will not be telling the Penguins how terrible I think their team is. Instead, I will be giving the Penguins the recognition their fans have been craving since last June. Deprived from accolades and respect all year, Penguins fans have been getting emo and cutting themselves like teenage girls. I will be doing my best to appease the most insecure of fanbases in the NHL, Pens fans, by finally giving them the respect they think they deserve.

I will start at the top of the franchise and work my way down.

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

In his early days, the legendary New York Islanders coach Al Arbour got so mad at him, his false teeth fell out.

“I went over to the bench to face the man, and he started to say ‘Jesus Christ,’ and as he’s saying it, the spit comes out of his mouth and lands on my face. Then his teeth flew out. He caught them just before they fell. I said to Al, ‘If you’re going to be spitting at me, I can’t be talking to you.’ ”

Daymond Langkow was hit with a shot today and was taken of the ice on a stretcher/body board today in Minnessota.

The shot came from the Flames point, Langkow, facing the blue line, sort of was hit and then bent from the waist as the shot went off.

The puck hit him right above his name on the back of the sweater and then his head hit the ice,

A very strange set of circumstances and I will update when more news is available.

added 4:37pm, Flames TV crew just updated and said he seems to be OK, taken to hospital for observation but has full movement, etc.

added 5:07pm, Russo’s Rants has the story on how the play developed.

added 6:57pm, Video of the Langkow incident can be watched below…

I know that this is a few days old but I wanted to point out great friend of the blog’s Scotty Wazz’s look at the Philadelphia Flyers goaltending unstableness:

Though, when you think Philadelphia-- many things jump to mind. Cheesesteaks, rowdy fans, and goalie issues. Since the lockout, Robert Esche, Antero Niittymaki, Martin Biron, Martin Houle, Emery, Boucher, and Leighton (twice) have been in net for the Flyers. If you even trace back before the lockout until the 1999-2000 season; add Jeff Hackett, Sean Burke, Neil Little, Roman Cechmanek, Boucher again, Maxime Ouellet, and John Vanbiesbrouck. That’s 13 goalies in ten seasons. While it’s not out of control in terms of size, it is a little suspect how none of them could really stick around for the long-term. While you can say it’s a matter of not having a consistent team around them or the pressure on being the franchise keeper could be factors, yet at the same time; you’d think you throw enough stuff against the wall, there’s something that’s bound to stick. You can even say that since Ron Hextall, there hasn’t be a goalie who has been capable to carry the Flyers banner-- and he stopped being a starter after the 1998-99 season.

If a team is going to come out and play an uninspired brand of hockey, that team deserves to lose.

That was the case this afternoon as the New York Rangers were dreadful in a 2-1 loss to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. They could not get the power play going, they left their goaltender Henrik Lundqvist out to dry and they made some stupid on-ice decisions that led to the Bruins’ two goals.

When you play that way and do those things, it will ultimately lead to a loss. Unfortunately, for the Blueshirts, this loss may have put a dagger in their playoff hopes as beat writer Andrew Gross of Ranger Rants and The Record tweeted the following after the loss:

Bruins defeat the NYRangers, 2-1, effectively ending Rangers playoff hopes.

Rookie defenseman Jamie McBain wasn’t expected to play on the Hurricanes this season. The Canes dismantled their blueline, then suffered a second bout of injuries, and this has bumped him not only up to the big team, but to the top pairing. Three games in, he’s doing a brilliant job of adjusting. All he’s done is put up four points in three games, including an assist on the game-winning goal on Thursday, and a buzzer-beating game-winning goal last night.

All he’s done is put up four points in three games, including an assist on the game-winning goal on Thursday, and a buzzer-beating game-winning goal last night.

from Ted Leonsis of Ted’s Take,

We have won our division and are up 33 points over our nearest division competitor with 10 games left to play.We lead the Eastern Conference by 16 points with 10 games left to play.

We lead the 8th place team in the Eastern Conference by 32 points. If the season ended today we would play Boston in the first round of the playoffs.

We lead Chicago by 9 points for most points in NHL although they have one game in hand.

We just completed a tough week road trip - four games in seven days - and we were successful and gained ground in the standings.

One valuable sabermetric number that is often ignored is zone starts. For each player, the zone where faceoffs occur (offensive, neutral or defensive) with that player on the ice is recorded. Some players are used for many more defensive faceoffs than offensive ones. These players tend to be lower scoring and have worse +/- and Corsi ratings than players who are on for significantly more offensive faceoffs than defensive ones, but those differences in their numbers do not show that the defensive player is a weaker player. They have a tougher job and may more more important to their team`s success.

Last year, Evgeni Malkin was a player who had one of the easiest jobs last year in terms of zone starts. He was the top scorer in the NHL and one reason for his offensive success was that he was put on the ice for offensive situations and taken off in defensive ones. On a team with other offensive stars (most notably Sidney Crosby), it is a poor way for the Penguins to allocate their shifts. Thus it was a good prediction that Evgeni Malkin`s offensive totals would decline this year. Malkin has 70 points in 63 games. If he scored at last year`s pace he would have 87 points by now.

from Mike Wagner of the Columbus Dispatch,

The brown-eyed, blond-haired eighth-grade cheerleader held up the hockey puck when her family walked into the hospital room.

“Papaw, look,” she said to her grandfather, “I got a souvenir.”

Brittanie Cecil lifted the puck, the one that had struck her in the head as she attended her first National Hockey League game.

The puck flew into the stands at Nationwide Arena when Blue Jackets center Espen Knutsen struck a routine slap shot against the Calgary Flames on March 16, 2002. The puck ricocheted off an opposing player’s stick and struck 13-year-old Brittanie.

Two days later, Brittanie was dead. Knutsen was left sobbing in the Blue Jackets’ locker room, his career beginning to unravel from the emotional fallout.
