The Remaking Of Dan Cleary

by Paul on 07/19/08 at 08:17 AM

from Brendan McCarthy of the Telegram,

In the summer of 2004, Cleary began - at the urging of his new agent, J.P. Barry, and his best friend, Shawn Horcoff, a former Oiler teammate - working out with fitness guru T.R. Goodman in Venice Beach, Calif.

Goodman has been widely credited for extending the career of Chris Chelios, a 46-year-old Red Wings defenceman.

“Physically,” said Chelios, a teammate of Cleary’s in Chicago when the latter was a rookie, “I don’t want to say he wasn’t working, but it just took him a while to learn he had to apply himself conditionally.”

“I would have to go to that summer,” Cleary told The Telegram’s Robin Short when asked to identify the defining moment of his career.

Newfoundland Proud Of Cleary

from Stanley Cup’s Blog at NHL Connect,

“As Newfoundlanders, we have to fight for every inch of everything that we get,” said Don Coombs, the mayor of Harbour Grace, Newfoundland and Labrador. “And Danny Cleary has taken that character and the personality of our province and made it work for him.”

The fortunes of Harbour Grace and its most celebrated son run parallel. Both have seen glorious highs and darkened lows, but have come out the other side shining.

from Snapshots at Mlive,

Despite the fact that many newspapers don’t publish on Canada Day (Happy Canada Day!), there’s no shortage of multimedia goodness pertaining to Red Wings forward Dan Cleary’s two-day celebration with the Stanley Cup in his home province, Newfoundland:

Global National posted a 2:22 clip of Cleary’s arrival in St. John’s and his trip to Janeway Children’s Hospital;

Cleary in Newfoundland

imageFrom the CP (via Slam),

Hockey’s greatest prize arrived in Canada’s youngest province on Monday, greeted by the first man from Newfoundland and Labrador to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup.

Newfoundland hockey hero Dan Cleary and a mob of fans welcomed the Cup on its arrival at the St. John’s airport. Cleary became the first Newfoundland-born player to win the Cup when the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL finals earlier this month.

“You don’t forget where you came from,” Cleary said.

We’ve had a ton of email requests from KK readers for more info on Dan Cleary’s time with the Stanley Cup (who knew you all loved Newfies so much?!) so let me send you off to Puck Daddy, who has a great selection of photos.

Update 4:22pm ET: Check out MLive for video of today’s activities.

Update 5:10pm ET: Kenn Oliver at The Telegram has a story up.

What A Host

from the Detroit Free Press,

Word spread quickly on the street that the Cup and Osgood were inside the Irish pub. Lines formed outside 821 Penniman Avenue to get a glimpse of North America’s oldest professional sports trophy, which is made of silver and nickel alloy.

And once you gained entrance inside O’Callaghan’s, it was pure bedlam.

“Oh, my God, I just drank out of the Stanley Cup,’’ said one female patron as she exited the bar.

While patrons poured their alcoholic beverages into the Cup for a chance at a celebratory swig, Osgood patiently accommodated, hunched over and standing on top of the bar, while pouring the bulky 34-pound trophy.

While he’s used to a certain amount of celebrity as a professional hockey player, he said the attention he has received in Newfoundland is beyond what he expected.

“We all know a certain level about privacy,” Cleary said. “This is a whole new level. This is like Steve Yzerman privacy level. I’m trying to relax and go with the flow. It’s not easy. I know it sounds stupid, but I’m very inexperienced.”

from Bob White at Coaster.com,

He was third to hoist the Cup, which first went to captain Niklas Lidstrom, first European to ever captain an NHL championship team, and then to 16-year veteran and first-time Cup winner Dallas Drake, who passed it on to Cleary.

“I wasn’t expecting to get it (the Cup) that soon,” he said. “It showed me how much the guys respect me and how they understood how huge this was for me. I love these guys, each and every one of them are friends. Now, we’ve got a bond for life, one that will never be broken.”

And just what was it like to finally raise the famous and coveted 35-pound piece of silverware?

Get Ready To Party Harbour Grace

from the CBC,

“To get it on Canada Day is something special,” said Coombs. “It gives everyone a chance to share with Danny … [and] be able to be a part of the history that he made.”

The town was practically painted red and white during the NHL playoffs, with a massive banner hoisted across the legendary coastal boat the Kyle, which is moored in the town’s harbour.

Everyone Is Happy

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

From a top prospect to chronic underachiever to a man without a contract three years ago, Cleary too has found a home in Detroit and, in return, has given them nothing but dedicated play.

“Here I am at the pinnacle of hockey,” he said in disbelief.

As soon as he took the Stanley Cup from Drake, Cleary sought out his family in the stands and raised the Cup to them.

“Oh my gosh, it’s so surreal,” said Cleary’s wife Jelena, holding 22-month-old daughter Elle in her arms. “I’m just so happy for him.”

Hits Keep Coming

From John Niyo at the Detroit News,

...afterward Maxime Talbot talked about looking into the 42-year-old Roberts’ eyes “and you’re kind of scared, you know, like, ‘Oh, my God, that guy’s intense!’ ”

“He certainly has provided a spark and some energy,” Cleary admitted. “He’s a gritty guy and he was a big influence on that winning goal. But we have guys that’ll hit and get in there and get dirty, too.”

One of those guys, Dallas Drake, was on the receiving end of a pair of Orpik’s hits in that highlight-reel shift Wednesday. Drake, though, had a shift just like it in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals, and tonight he’ll undoubtedly look to introduce himself to his old friend, Mr. Roberts.

Cleary Returning to Form

From The Southern Gazette,

“Really, it’s been the last six games in the playoffs that I’ve been feeling close to what I was before the injury.”

The face mask, styled after that used by a place-kicker in football, has been attached to Cleary’s helmet since he returned to the ice. He doesn’t like using it, but he has no choice if he wants to play.

“It’s a win-lose situation. I wear it, and I can play. I can play better without it, but if I get hit, I’m out of the line-up. It’s really hard to see the puck at your feet, but I’ve adjusted. A couple of high sticks have hit the shield, so it has definitely saved me.”

While the timing of his return home has not been decided (he may come home as the first person from Newfoundland and Labrador with his name engraved on the Stanley Cup), Cleary will be heading home to Riverhead this summer.

Cleary Back

from Red Wings Corner,

Dan Cleary had surgery to remove wires from his jaw this morning and remarkably was at practice and made it through every drill. He’ll be in the lineup tomorrow night.
Cleary revealed the the front of his jaw is numb and could remain that way for a long, long time. Had he chosen the other procedure—where his jaw would have been wired shut for six weeks instead of two and he would have missed the rest of the season—he wouldn’t have that numbness. That’s a pretty big sacrifice to return to the ice.

added 9:17pm, much more at Red Wings Corner on the signing and it looks like Lilja will have to wait until after the playoffs to talk contract again…

Cleary Would Welcome Hossa In Detroit

from CBC,

Cleary, currently sidelined with a broken jaw, was a teammate of Hossa during the NHL lockout in 2004-05, with Mora of the Swedish Elite League.

“Any team that gets this guy … he’s a real good person, a great team guy,” Cleary told CBCSports.ca reporter Doug Harrison on Monday. “He’s the most explosive player I’ve ever seen. Straight-away speed, no one touches him.”

While adding Hossa would allow Red Wings coach Mike Babcock to split up the dynamic duo of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, Cleary believes it’s wishful thinking.

Can The Wings Fit Cleary Into Salary Structure

from the Detroit Free Press,

“We want to find people that fit into our program, at a price that makes sense for the player and the club,” general manager Ken Holland said. “We’re hoping Dan wants to stay here. We’re willing to pay, but if we can’t get something done, we’ll look at options.”

Wings Talking Long Term Contract With Cleary

by Paul on 01/19/08 at 11:02 AM
Comments (1)

from the St. John’s Telegram,

Now that he’s found his groove in Hockeytown, U.S.A., Cleary doesn’t see any reason to leave. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season and doesn’t feel the need to test the open market.

“I certainly hope I don’t leave,” said Cleary, who is pocketing US$662,500 this season and is likely due for a healthy raise. “We’re talking now about contract extensions, so hopefully something can get done. We’re talking long term.

“I’d like to play here as long as I can.”

Hurry Up And Sign Cleary

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

The Wings have a stacked club, but GM Ken Holland doesn’t want to let unrestricted free agent forward Dan Cleary get away. He may be their most versatile player, creative enough to play with the big boys, strong enough defensively to be a shut-down forward. “Some other team may think Danny can be a No. 2 centre and may offer him a lot of money,” said one NHL scout.
