Minor Hip Surgery For Gaborik

via the Pioneer Press,

The Wild’s Marian Gaborik underwent successful minor arthroscopic surgery on his right hip joint this morning at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo., according to team general manager Doug Risebrough.

The Wild sent Gaborik to Dr. Marc J. Philippon, one of the world’s leading orthopedic hip surgeons, who performed the surgery to repair a torn labrum and to relieve some impingement in Gaborik’s right hip.

Gaborik Having Hip Problems

from the Pioneer Press,

Marian Gaborik has what the Wild are calling a “hip deficiency” and will require further medical tests before the team determines the treatment.

The Wild issued a short statement Thursday saying the injury was “attributable to overuse,” after the Slovak Ice Federation announced the team wouldn’t permit Gaborik to play for Slovakia in the world championships because of the injury.

Wild general manager Doug Risebrough said he doesn’t know how serious the injury is.

“I don’t know either way, so I don’t want to comment on it,” he said.

Risebrough said Gaborik has seen team doctors who are consulting with others to determine a course of treatment. Risebrough said Gaborik didn’t inform the team of any discomfort during the playoffs.

Avalanche Finish Off the Wild

From Jerseys & Hockey Love, Tapeleg puts his feelings into poetry:

Theo steals,
Gaborik reels,
Wild kneel,
Tapeleg squeals
(but in a manly way)

And from Jim Souhan at the Star-Tribune:

“When I look at the effort that our guys put on, you can’t ask for much more,’’ Lemaire said. “Except goals.’’

Unfortunately for the Wild, the NHL czars insist on keeping score that way. With goals.

Gaborik A No Show

from Jim Souhan of the Star-Tribune,

This was a big series for Gabby. He’s a year from free agency. This postseason could have been the crucible in which he proved himself irreplaceable.

Instead, through five games, he’s disappeared as surely as Alex Rodriguez in October.

When a talented player becomes frustrated, the operative phrase in hockey is, “He’s squeezing the stick too tight.”

It’s a wonder Gaborik is left with anything more than sawdust (or melted graphite) by the end of each shift.

Gaborik Trying To Find His Room

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

Two games into the quarterfinals, Gaborik has no points and three shots. He has been smothered by the Avalanche defense, which was supposed to be its weakness.

“There’s not a lot of room out there, so I’ve got to try to create room by skating, by changing my game up a little bit,” Gaborik said. “I have to find the room. I have to. There’s always an Avs sweater on you. I have to work for [space].”

Not Wild for the Style

by Alanah on 03/12/08 at 01:31 AM

From Jim Souhan at the Star Tribune,

The NHL is about dumping the puck, taking the opponents’ stars out of the game, working a defensive system and waiting for a mistake that will create a scoring chance. If NFL coaches thought like NHL coaches, every team would punt on first down.

Take the Wild—please. They’re not just slumping—they’re boring. Because of the Wild’s style and the NHL’s emphasis on defensive systems, Marian Gaborik spends most of the game looking like a guy waiting for a bus.

Don’t repeat the popular argument that he needs to work harder, needs to be more of a two-way player, blah, blah, blah. Gaborik is a scorer. When he scores, the Wild almost always wins. Ergo: Gaborik should spend his ice time trying to score.

That would be good for the fans, the team, the league. Instead, we get to hear Jacques Lemaire chide him about defensive responsibility.

Gaborik Likes The East

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

The Wild is going to have a dicey situation on their hands this summer if they go to Marian Gaborik and, say, offer him $7.5 million a year for five years in a new deal and he says ,"Hmmm, let me think about it.” No way does Minnesota want Gaborik in the last year of his contract and an unrestricted free agent in July 2009, like the Marian Hossa situation in Atlanta right now. If he drags his feet, maybe they investigate trading him, sooner rather than later.

Gaborik Healthy & Scoring

by Paul on 01/14/08 at 05:31 PM
Comments (0)

from CanWest via the National Post,

A healthy Gaborik has been somewhat of a treat for the Wild this season. He also took home the same honour earlier this season after he became the first player in more than a decade to score five goals in a game, Dec. 20 versus the New York Rangers.

In 2006-07, the 25-year-old native of Trencin, Slovakia, was limited to just 48 games, in large part due to a groin injury. When Gaborik was in the lineup, the Wild went 33-9-6; when he scored a goal, the team was 19-2-2.

Needless to say, as long as Gaborik, and fellow Slovak Pavol Demitra, stay healthy, the Wild will continue to compete for the Northwest title.

“I feel pretty good right now,” said Gaborik, who has 25 goals and 22 assists in 40 games this season.

Gaborik With Five Tonight

KK normally doesn’t do game recaps, but this one is special…

from the AP via Yahoo,

Marian Gaborik posted the NHL’s first five-goal game in a decade, lifting the Minnesota Wild to a 6-3 win over the New York Rangers on Thursday night.

Gaborik’s outburst was the biggest in the league since Sergei Fedorov scored five for Detroit on Dec. 26, 1996, in an overtime game against Washington. Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux was the last to net five in regulation, pulling off the feat on March 26, 1996 versus St. Louis.

The video describes the action.  Hasek received a 2 minute tripping call.

Hasek commented he asked the ref about the penalty call and was told, Come on Dom, the score is 5-0, lets just finish up.  Hasek was concerned about his shutout which he did get.

via the Arizona Republic,

Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski was suspended for one game by the NHL for his hit on Marian Gaborik of the Minnesota Wild during their game Wednesday night.

The suspension was announced Thursday afternoon, and Jovanovski, who has two goals and 13 assists, will sit out tonight’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

So said the Hulk, beating his chest for the media yesterday.

But first, about the Oilers.  The dark powers of boys named Alice (shootout specialist extraordinaire) and his partner the WhoreCough, plus a temporarily functioning powerplay, was all it took to give Edmonton their second s/o win over Vancouver in a week.  But neither loss should devastate a Canucks fan—great games, right?  (Although Tony Gallagher had a serious difference of opinion on that subject a few days ago—but I’ll worry about agreeing with Gallagher when the earth shifts on its rotational axis...)

Anyway, with all the fuss from Derek Boogaard, threatening retaliation on Markus Naslund or the Sedins tonight, there’s a lot of posturing going on. And I like posturing, my favorite part so far being this promotional poster for the game, found in the Pioneer Press today:

Nastiness Between Minnesota & Vancouver

by Alanah on 11/17/07 at 01:56 PM

From Michael Russo at the Star-Tribune,

If Mattias Ohlund is suspended, it would happen before tomorrow because Vancouver has a game.

It’ll be an interesting decision. After seeing the replay again more closely well after game, one wonders if league disciplinarian Colin Campbell will take into account Ohlund was reacting to Koivu’s attempted elbow.

I would think he would want to suspend him to perhaps keep Wednesdays rematch more civil and to also keep Ohlund safe.

Also, ill tell you what, after looking at Marian Gaborik’s elbow on Ryan Kesler again, he’s lucky he didn’t get a major. It was a leap at Kesler’s head.

Pimp My Hockey Team

by Alanah on 11/17/07 at 01:56 AM

Jason Botchford at The Vancouver Province was impressed with the 6-2 win:

The Canucks started Friday’s game like they had just left the set of Pimp My Hockey Team.

Suddenly, all the nagging flaws, the worrisome blemishes and the inadequacies that had them mired in a mediocre start to the season were scrubbed clean.

In their place was a souped-up, turbo-charged team that looked like a sleek sports car—complete with tinted windows and halogen headlights. It was enough to blow the doors off a tired, unmotivated Minnesota Wild team before the Wild even got out of the blocks.

It was a great performance, but now for the not-so-fun stuff: Should someone get suspended? After a night of “pimping” a couple of guys might deserve some jail time.

Gaborik Apologizes to Your Fantasy Hockey Team

by Alanah on 11/15/07 at 03:15 PM

From Sportsnet.ca,

In an unprecedented move, Minnesota Wild forward Marian Gaborik has apologized to fantasy hockey owners for playing in a defensive system.

“When developing this team it is obvious that management paid no attention to fantasy owners, but instead selfishly decided that winning games was more important,” Gaborik said in a “prepared statement.”

The Slovak scorer has 13 points in 12 games this season, including a game-winning goal against the Calgary Flames. For his efforts the Wild are off to a 9-6-2 start, but fantasy owners are frustrated that Gaborik is not a Top 5 in every offensive category.

“I will continue to help you out when I can,” Gaborik explained. “But I am afraid management is obsessed with giving Minnesota fans a Stanley Cup.”

Gaborik & Demitra Out Again

by Paul on 11/05/07 at 04:40 PM

via the Pioneer Press,

The Minnesota Wild will throw another depleted lineup on the ice tonight when they play host to the Edmonton Oilers. Marian Gaborik is out, Pavol Demitra is out and Wes Walz hasn’t come back.

Gaborik and Demitra have groin injuries; Walz hasn’t returned from an excused, and unexplained, absence and will miss his third game.

Gaborik played the past two games and played well, scoring five points, including a two-goal game in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Calgary. He sat out practice Sunday, but reporters were told he was simply given the day off.

Asked if something changed between Sunday and this morning, when Gaborik was pulled from practice, coach Jacques Lemaire said, “Something changed a bit.”

Gaborik & Backstrom Out

from the Pioneer Press,

Marian Gaborik injured his groin in practice Saturday and will miss Sunday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center.

General manager Doug Risebrough said he made the decision to sit Gaborik as a precaution. The right wing is officially listed as day to day, which is how his 34-day layoff last season started.

“I’m definitely not going to miss 40 games again,” Gaborik said....

That wasn’t the only bad news the Wild absorbed at practice Saturday. No. 1 goaltender Niklas Backstrom also left practice early because of a groin injury and will not play against Colorado

Can Gaborik Play a Full Season?

by Alanah on 10/02/07 at 01:33 AM

From Brian Murphy at the Pioneer Press,

Playing wire to wire is all that remains for Gaborik, 25, to prove he belongs in the same company with Heatley, Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin and Marian Hossa, next-generation superstars with equal talent but more durability.

“I think that’s fair,” Wild general manager Doug Risebrough said. “The true picture of him persevering for 80 games and being productive in all situations, he’s just got to play the 80 games.”

Pierre McGuire, a former NHL coach and current TSN and NBC hockey analyst, said it is time for Gaborik to elevate his stature.

“When you’re talking about great players like Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman, no matter what they did individually, over time, you have to prove you can do it for an entire season,” McGuire said. “Very few players can do what (Gaborik) does. But it’s longevity, durability. Do they have the determination? Are they willing to pay the price? It’s a huge recognition year for him.”
