Chatting with the Flyers
by Alanah on 05/09/08 at 02:09 PMComments (0)
From a press conference Q&A session featuring Philadelphia Flyers players Daniel Briere, R.J. Umberger, and Martin Biron.
Q. Danny, the way you’ve played this season and, the way the team has played overall this season, does this further validate your decision to leave the Sabres and go to the Flyers?
DANIEL BRIERE: You know what, when I was looking at my options, obviously looking at Philly, you know, very similar as far as offense, where it’s a team that doesn’t just rely on one or two guys or on just one line. We’ve seen it through the year. Everybody’s chipping in.

Toronto Sports Network
by Alanah on 05/09/08 at 10:44 AMComments (3)
An FYI to TSN and their heartfelt commitment to the source who tells them the Leafs have actually spoken to Dave Nonis, a note from Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun:
Nonis denied early Thursday in an interview that anyone from the Leafs had even contacted him.
“I haven’t talked to anyone from Toronto at this time,” Nonis told TEAM 1040 radio in the morning. “Right now, Toronto is not one of the teams I’ve spoken to and we’ll see if they do contact me. I don’t really have any intentions of rushing into something unless it looks like something I have to do. I’d prefer to sit and wait. It’s still very early.”
TSN—who almost certainly listened to that same interview—still managed to come up with this:

Canucks Golf Season Updates
by Alanah on 05/07/08 at 07:28 PMComments (8)
Just a few stories mildly related to Canuckish-type things:
- Dave Nonis is being summoned for an interview in hell
- Alex Edler made a not-so-endearing contribution to one very embarrassing Swedish team loss at the World Championships - a 10 minute game misconduct penalty
- A company called Coleman Analytics has five NHL teams (and they’re looking to add Vancouver to their list of clients) that are paying them up to $100K a year for “basic” analytics services. Honestly, I bet plenty of obsessive & mathematically-inclined hockey fans would gladly kick those numbers out for free, or maybe a bit of swag. (I know, I know. I’m over-simplifying… but at least let The Forechecker bid for the job.)

Questions for Lidstrom, Franzen and Osgood
by Alanah on 05/07/08 at 02:49 PMComments (1)
A short Q&A session with the media, talking with Detroit Red Wings players Nicklas Lidstrom, Johan Franzen and Chris Osgood.
Q. Chris, 6?0 an incredible run here in the playoffs. Where do you point the finger? Why have you had such success?
CHRIS OSGOOD: In two parts I’ll answer. Personally, just doing the right things in practice with Jim Bedard and staying ready. Even when I wasn’t playing, I felt confident, even before I went in that I could do the job. Just being ready so I wasn’t standing there doubting myself whatsoever.

Questions for Mike Babcock & Ken Holland
by Alanah on 05/07/08 at 02:42 PMComments (0)
A short Q&A session with the media, talking with Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock and GM Ken Holland.
Q. What sort of lessons do you take from being at this point last season as you enter this series?
COACH MIKE BABCOCK: Well, I think the big thing is I’ve been really fortunate to be here. This is my third time in five years, and it’s the best time of year. It’s a lot of fun. You want to prepare as hard as you can and get your team ready to go.

NHL Teleconference with Turco and Morrow
by Alanah on 05/06/08 at 04:21 PMComments (1)
Yet another NHL teleconference today featured Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco, who has posted and 8-4 record with a sparkling .173 goals-against average, and Dallas captain Brenden Morrow, who has recorded seven goals and four assists for 11 points in 12 games, including two overtime game winners in the series win over San Jose last round.
Here is the transcript of their Q&A.
Q. Marty, you’re just fresh off winning two incredible series and beating two fellow great goalies. I see right off the bat that people are already asking you about your record at Joe Louis. There’s no time to breathe. What do you make of that? Does it mean anything?

NHL Conference Call with Henrik Zetterberg
by Alanah on 05/06/08 at 02:57 PMComments (0)
Today, the NHL hosted a NHL conference call making Detroit Red Wings center Henrik Zetterberg available for questions. In ten post-season games Henrik has recorded seven goals and six assists for 13 points, scored two game-winners and leads the league with a plus 10 plus/minus rating.
Transcript from the Q&A is below.
Q. Could you talk a little bit about the chemistry between you and Datsyuk specifically, but also with Homer as well. A lot of good players have difficulty playing with each other, but you have had a chemistry almost from the beginning. Talk about what each of you does that sort of makes this line work very well.

Do You Watch Hockey in HD?
by Alanah on 05/06/08 at 01:15 PMComments (30)
Yesterday, I confessed at the tail-end of a post that I’ve never seen a hockey game in HD. I expected to be almost alone in this, but apparently not—and a few of the commenters who responded are prominent hockey bloggers, who also don’t have HD readily available. Some of their thoughts:
Mike Chen: “Don’t feel bad, I’ve got standard def too. Sometimes, bills are just more important than kick-ass TV.”
Earl Sleek from Battle of California: “I haven’t seen a game in HD either, and I thought I was the only one! Maybe we’re missing out, but I dunno. I have yet to really say, “damn, what’s going on out there?”
Baroque from HockeyTownTodd: “I too haven’t seen a game in HD. And I have no trouble seeing the puck on my little non-wall-sized television, either.”
But others raved about the technology, as well (*more of their comments here). So I’m curious about this on a bigger scale—Do you have HDTV? If you want to use the comments here to say why or why not, please do. After all, owning something like this isn’t cheap. Is it worth it?
Fans vs Fans

On The Hockey Show hosted by the NHL Network Online, hockey fanatic Scott Ferrall encounters the heated rivalry between Flyers and Canadiens fans. Video is below.
Also, while I’m on the subject of the NHL Network Online, I contacted their technical people this week with a request for more information being made available to those who are encountering technical problems viewing the material. They were working on it already, but responded quickly by letting me know they put this FAQ page up. It’s a work in progress, but at least it will help troubleshoot some issues when accessing the available media on different computer systems.
Anyway, back to the video…

Random Musings During Playoff Time

Early favorite to replace Ron MacLean as the HNIC host when or if he ever leaves - Elliotte Friedman
Speaking of TV guys, Ed Olczyk continues to impress with his analytical work. Breaking down a play moments after it has happened is hard to do, but ‘Eddie O’ is always pointing out key plays during the game.
This coming from a Detroit Red Wings fan, but you almost feel sorry for all the injuries the Colorado Avalanche have had in the recent past. OK, that was long enough to sympathize for the Avs!

The Best Defense is a Stupid Offense

From John Dellapina’s Blueshirts Blog:
Finally, for all those from other media outlets and newspapers who have sarcastically dismissed our initial web story about Sean Avery’s hospitalization since the Rangers refuted it Wednesday afternoon, I wonder:
Was your initial reaction that the story couldn’t have been correct or did you simply race up to the MSG Training Center to get player reaction? And, did you call the hospital and/or Avery’s representatives to get the real story or did your “reporting” simply consist of taking the team’s word for what happened?
Fortunately, the intrepid men an women of the press who have exposed baseball’s steroid problems didn’t similarly regurgitate what they were told by people who understandably want their businesses viewed as beyond reproach.
Geezus. My congratulations, Dellapina—for entirely missing the point.

Standards for Online Journalism - Sean Avery and The NY Daily News
by Alanah on 04/30/08 at 01:57 PMComments (5)
The reports on Sean Avery’s medical condition this morning started off at a furious pace with words the NY Daily News (reporters John Dellapina and Larry McShane) had to have known would incite a frenzy:
Rangers bad boy Sean Avery, unconscious and not breathing, was rushed to a Manhattan hospital Wednesday morning in cardiac arrest just hours after his team’s playoff loss, sources said.
By 12:30pm Eastern Time, the NY Rangers issued a statement denying these facts, and confirming rumors that were already circulating: that Avery was in fact suffering from a lacerated spleen. A serious condition, but one that did not involve anything as extreme as Avery not breathing for any period of time.
By early afternoon, David Shoalts at the Globe & Mail was quoting a NYR spokesman who stated that “[Avery] walked into the hospital and was not on a stretcher.” And Steve Simmons at the Toronto Sun spoke with Avery’s agent, Pat Morris, who says the condition was never life-threatening.
Almost certainly, this was an entirely innocent mistake by the Daily News, but a profitable one for their website, and they’ve not handled the situation very well in general.

How to Be a Professional Hockey Player
by Alanah on 04/29/08 at 02:05 PMComments (0)
From David Littman at The Hockey News,
I joined the Oyster Bay youth hockey organization and went to summer hockey camps where I was coached by the likes of Resch, Smith, Lou Lamoriello and Brian Burke.
When I wasn’t playing on the ice, I was playing street hockey. When I wasn’t playing street hockey, I was in my basement throwing tennis balls against the stairs and making glove saves that would win my team the Stanley Cup.
Hockey was all I thought about and there was no doubt in my mind I would play in the NHL.
But not everyone else thought so.
Littman was originally drafted by the Buffalo Sabres and played for both the Sabres and Tampa Bay, as well as in the AHL, ECHL and IHL. Currently he’s the producer of EA Sports NHL series and now a blogger with THN, promising a lot of great stories.
Best and Worst NHL Player Values of 2008
by Alanah on 04/25/08 at 04:26 PMComments (0)
In today’s Canadian Business Online, writer Andy Holloway gives a brief rundown on the numerous ways that the NHL seems to have made gains in the U.S. this season, summarizing the positive situation with renewed television contracts, the increasing criticisms of traditional sports networks for non-athletic sports broadcasting, and even mentioning NHL.com’s record-setting online numbers from earlier in the week.
Also included in the article was a link to CBO’s annual assessment of the best values in the NHL:
Canadian Business Online put the NHL to the test to find the players who offer the best mix of high performance and low cost. These are the best value players. They’re not necessarily hockey’s most skilled in absolute terms — nor are they always the cheapest monetarily — but it’s the dream team for fans and cash-strapped owners.
And who are the worst value players?

Quit the Whining
by Alanah on 04/24/08 at 05:18 PMComments (8)
From Rory Boylen at The Hockey News:
And, yet, there are still complaints raining in about Hockey Night in Canada, the premiere hockey production.
Bias coverage.
Don Cherry is a hot-air-filled loud mouth.
Bob Cole can’t keep up with the play.
P.J. Stock, the bubble boy, is uninformed and irrelevant.Give it a rest. Next thing you know people will be complaining how Foster Hewitt welcomed the hockey fans from Canada and Newfoundland, but not Quebec or any other province, in the opening sequence.
The fact of the matter is, HNIC is the best of the best, the cream of the crop, the hockey fan’s weekly spiritual gathering, if you will.
Couldn’t agree more.
NHL Conference Call with Lindy Ruff and Barry Trotz
by Alanah on 04/24/08 at 04:07 PMComments (0)
On today’s NHL conference call for the media, the guests were Buffalo Sabres’ coach, Lindy Ruff, and Nashville Predators’ coach Barry Trotz. The coaches were invited to help preview the semifinal round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Here is the transcript from the Q&A.
Q. I wanted to ask you both, if you were to make a pick here of the final four teams in each conference, why wouldn’t you pick the team that did best against your own team? For instance, Buffalo did well against Montreal and Philly but 0-4 against both Pittsburgh and the Rangers. Nashville did well against Detroit and Colorado but 0-4 against San Jose, and 3-1 against Dallas.

Hometown Announcers
by Alanah on 04/18/08 at 02:16 AMComments (0)
From Judd Zulgad at the Star Tribune,
Anyone who tuned into KSTC’s telecast of the Wild playoff game Monday night at Colorado likely came away believing Marc Joannette and Tim Peel are among the NHL’s most incompetent referees.
How could viewers have any other impression after listening to Wild play-by-play man Dan Terhaar and analyst Mike Greenlay? The latter spent far too much time criticizing the officials and the former did nothing to rein him in during the Wild’s 3-2 overtime victory.

Habs en Français
by Alanah on 04/17/08 at 03:30 PMComments (2)
From the CP via Yahoo:
In the excitement, French-language sports channel RDS has reeled in more Quebec viewers than CBC has nationwide with its Habs broadcasts. And even many English-speaking hockey fans are tuning in to the French coverage.
Some Anglos in Quebec say they’re choosing RDS over the CBC’s English coverage, and many believe the public broadcaster should stick to what it knows best - Toronto.
“The announcers are better, they’re not as biased and they don’t care who’s winning - they tell it as it is,” Pat Wychocki said of RDS…
This reminds me—as a kid out living out west, we almost always watched (or listened to) the Montreal Canadiens and the Quebec Nordiques on a French language broadcast, when it was available.
MLB Writer Takes a Shot at the NHL

From Mychael Urban, national writer for the official site, MLB.com:
Does the U.S. media have an East Coast bias? Sure. Our country was founded there, as were all of the big-time sports leagues. (Save your e-mails, hockey fans. We’re aware that the NHL was founded in Canada. We’re also aware that you aren’t “big-time” until your TV ratings top those of “Golden Girls” reruns on Lifetime.)
Very original—I’m sure it took him all night to come up with that.
Now, if only I paid enough attention to baseball to be able to toss insults back…

A Touch of Hypocrisy
by Alanah on 04/10/08 at 05:04 PMComments (2)
From Barry Melrose Rocks,
But what really bugs me is hypocrisy.
When the MSM preaches about how they’ve gone to J-school and are so much more important because of it, that’s fine. When the MSM calls bloggers no talent hacks that reek of fan bias, that’s fine. There’s one problem with all that, though. You see, when you say those things, boy you had better back them up. Or maybe I’m wrong. Maybe this is just a case of someone in the minority not representing the upstanding majority. Tell me if I wrong because, unlike many newspapers, BMR has a comments section after every article. Oh, excuse me, post. But majority, minority, whatever. If the MSM’s rules are to single out one person and make them a poster child for the whole, then I think I should be allowed to play by those rules as well.
So today, we examine Mr. Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun. Why? Lately, with the hometown Sens facing the Pens in the playoffs, he has sounded more like a Senators fanboy or a crazed message boarder than an actual journalist.
Also: links to the original Brennan story and its fallout can be found at James Mirtle’s blog.
Sharks Fans Getting the Shaft
by Alanah on 04/10/08 at 02:24 PMComments (8)
From The Consumerist,
Comcast SportsNet has more sports than they do channels. When fans of the San Jose Sharks tuned in to see playoff hockey last night they were surprised to see a baseball game in progress. When that game went into extra innings, ComcastSportsNet decided to stick with the game and drop playoff hockey.
And they might do it again tonight.

Great Times to be a Hockey Fan
by Alanah on 04/08/08 at 04:12 PMComments (3)
From Eric McErlain at The Sporting News,
As I’ve written before, the early 21st century may be the best time in history to be a professional sports fan, and that’s even the case for the NHL—a sport that plenty of American newspaper editors and television producers would like to see shunted off to the margins. With only incredibly rare exceptions, virtually every game that your home team plays will be on television. And if you manage to miss the game, you can access the highlights online via NHL.com, or perhaps just your favorite bits, like the most exciting goals, hits and fights that proliferate on YouTube. And if you live hundreds or even thousands of miles from your favorite team, there’s always the NHL Center Ice PPV package, the out of town fan’s ultimate lifeline.
For some critics, that’s just not enough, as they often mention the fact that Versus, the cable network that carries NHL games two times a week during the regular season, can’t be found in hotels around the country. If that’s a problem, just invest in a Slingbox…
You know, I’ve often wondered about this myself. I realize not everyone can afford a Slingbox, but I’ve always wondered why so many media members—who frequently make the criticism that Eric points out—don’t have them. They’re an awesome little gizmo (and no, I’m not making any money for pointing this out...!).
NHL Conference Call: Lindy Ruff and Ken Hitchcock
by Alanah on 04/08/08 at 03:01 PMComments (0)
Today, the NHL hosted a teleconference call for the media to ask questions of Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff and Columbus Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock.
Here is the transcript of that Q&A.
Q. The emphasis has been in the west all year now. Now the popular belief is whoever comes out of the west is going to be the Stanley Cup champion. Do you have that sense, as well?
KEN HITCHCOCK: No, I don’t. I think one of the problems is when you have so many good teams that what’s left of your team at the end of the three series that you have to play in sometimes isn’t much. I think a lot of it depends on the damage that gets done in some of these series.
I think when you look at the competitiveness of the teams and the closeness of really almost all eight teams in the playoffs, you know, I think health is going to be a major issue on whoever comes out from this series because it has the makings, especially in these early rounds, of some really long series here.
