John Weisbrod Added To Flames Management Staff

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today the hiring of John Weisbrod as Assistant General Manager/Player Personnel to Flames General Manager Jay Feaster.

“We are pleased to be able to add someone with John’s experience to our staff,” said Feaster. “Not only does he come with an extensive background in various disciplines of hockey, John has won championships as General Manager in both the AHL and IHL and most recently in his current position, leading the pro and collegiate scouting staff of the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins. John has the current experience and knowledge that I need from the person in this position.”

Weisbrod, a native of Syosset, NY, joins the Flames after winning the Stanley Cup as the Director of Pro and Collegiate Scouting for the Boston Bruins where he has been since joining the organization in September of 2006. Prior to that, John spent the 2005-06 season as a pro scout for the Dallas Stars out of the New England region.

The Harvard graduate became the General Manager/Director of Operations for the Albany River Rats (affiliate of the New Jersey Devils) in 1993 and won the Calder Cup as AHL Champions in 1995. Additionally, he served as the General Manager of the Orlando Solar Bears winning the Turner Cup as IHL Champions in 2001. When the IHL disbanded, the Solar Bears owner promoted him into the Magic organization in an administrative position. However, he was soon promoted to General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of the NBA’s Orlando Magic for 2004-2005 season before returning to hockey in May of 2005.

Flames Add Two To Hockey Staff

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today they have named Clint Malarchuk Goaltender Coach and Chris Snow Director of Video Analysis.

Malarchuk joins the Flames following one season with the Atlanta Thrashers as the team’s goaltending consultant. Malarchuk will work with all goaltenders throughout the Flames system at the NHL and developmental league levels, as well as a mentoring role with amateur prospects.

“When we concluded our interview with Clint, I asked Brent what he thought, and without hesitation he said, ‘I think we should offer him a contract right now’,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “We had interviewed half a dozen candidates at that point, and it was the first time Brent had such an immediate reaction and felt so strongly that we had found the perfect fit both for Brent but, even more importantly, for our goaltenders. We welcome Clint to the Flames’ family and look forward to a very long and mutually rewarding relationship.”

Flames Sign Carson For Two Years

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today the signing of defenseman Brett Carson.

“Based on his solid play at the end of last season, we believe Brett can be an every day defenseman for us,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “In our end-of-season meetings a number of our top forwards commented on his consistent ability to get the puck to them in transition, and we are confident he will continue to develop his overall game.”

Carson, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan, was originally acquired by the Flames off waivers from Carolina on February 28, 2011. Originally drafted by the Hurricanes in the 4th round (109th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Carson is a former Calgary Hitmen having played for them from 2002-06. He has spent parts of the last three seasons in the NHL accumulating two goals and 10 assists for 12 points and 20 penalty minutes in 78 games.

Contract terms: Two year contract at $550,000 and $600,000.

Flames/Rangers Trade

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today they have acquired from the New York Rangers left winger Roman Horak (Chilliwack/WHL), and two Rangers 2nd round picks (projected to be 43rd and 57th overall) in this year’s NHL Draft in exchange for defenceman Tim Erixon and Calgary’s 5th round selection in the 2011 NHL Draft.

Horak, a native of Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, is coming off a career season with the Chilliwack Bruins where he netted a career high 26 goals along with 52 assists for 78 points in 64 games playing alongside Flames 2009 3rd round pick Ryan Howse. Horak just completed his second season with the Chilliwack Bruins and was originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the 5th round (127th overall) in the 2009 NHL Draft.

“Once we realized that we were not going to be able to come to terms with Tim Erixon, we wanted to make sure we turned that pick into an asset,” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster. “We are excited to be able to get a player of Roman’s caliber in addition to landing two second round picks in the upcoming draft.”

Flames Terminate Contract Of Prospect Watt

Calgary, AB – Calgary Flames announced today that forward J.D. Watt’s contract with the Calgary Flames has been terminated, effective immediately.

“J.D. notified us on Monday that he was no longer interested in pursuing his career with the Calgary Flames organization,” said Flames Acting General Manager Jay Feaster. “He informed us of his decision and as a result, he was then suspended and cleared unconditional waivers this morning. We are moving forward in the best interests of the hockey club, our players in Abbotsford and the Flames organization.” 

Watt has played 27 games with the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League this season, recording one goal and three assists for four points while accumulating 73 penalty minutes.  The 23 year old native of Cremona, AB was originally drafted by the Flames in the 4th round (111th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Calgary Claims Brendan Mikkelson From The Ducks

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today that defenseman Brendan Mikkelson has been claimed off waivers.

Mikkelson, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan, has 67 games of NHL experience with Anaheim. He has five assists and 38 penalty minutes over parts of three NHL seasons with the Ducks. Mikkelson was originally drafted by Anaheim in the 2nd round (31st overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Michel Goulet Joins Flames Scouting Staff

Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames Executive Vice President & General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the appointment of Michel Goulet as western professional scout.

Goulet, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998, will be based in Denver, CO and along with Eastern Pro Scout Steve Leach, will report directly to Assistant General Manager Jay Feaster.
“Michel Goulet has enjoyed an outstanding career in professional hockey, first as an incredibly talented player and later as a talent evaluator and administrator. He has helped assemble championship teams at both the NHL and AHL affiliate level, and he brings a wealth of knowledge to our pro scouting ranks. We are pleased to welcome him to the Flames’ organization,” said Sutter.

The 50 year old Goulet joins the Flames organization following 15 years as a member of the Colorado Avalanche management/scouting staff.  As Vice-President of Player Personnel, Goulet had his name engraved on the Stanley Cup in 1996 and 2001.

Flames Sign Christopher Breen

Calgary, AB – Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the signing of defenseman Christopher Breen of the Peterborough Petes from the Ontario Hockey League.

Breen, a native of Uxbridge, Ontario has played in 249 regular season games and 15 playoff games over five OHL seasons. At the conclusion of Peterborough’s 2009-10 season, Breen played one game for the Abbotsford Heat (AHL) registering one assist and four penalty minutes.

Flames/Blackhawks Trade

Calgary, AB – Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the acquisition of defenseman Aaron Johnson from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forward Kyle Greentree.

Johnson, a native of Nova Scotia, has 184 games of NHL experience between Columbus, NY Islanders and Chicago. In 38 games with the Blackhawks last season, Johnson recorded 8 points and 33 penalty minutes.

Staffan Kronwall Signs With Flames

Calgary, AB – Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the signing of defenseman Staffan Kronwall.

Kronwall, a native of Jarfalla, Sweden, has over 50 games of NHL experience split between Washington and Toronto. Kronwall was originally drafted by Toronto in the 9th round (285th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
