Keith Aucoin Recalled By Capitals

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled center Keith Aucoin from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey league (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Aucoin, 30, is a ninth-year pro who stands 5’9”, 162 pounds. The Waltham, Mass., native has played in four games for Hershey and ranks third on the Bears in scoring with one goal and four assists. Last season Aucoin recorded six points (two goals, four assists) in 12 games with Washington, including five points (two goals, three assists) in the final seven games of the season. He has played in 65 career NHL games with the Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes, recording seven goals and 14 assists.

Capitals Sign Trio

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Shaone Morrisonn and forwards Eric Fehr, Chris Bourque and Kyle Wilson to one-year contracts and forward Steve Pinizzotto to a two year-contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Capitals Name Bob Woods Asst. Coach

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have hired Bob Woods from the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Hershey Bears as an assistant coach, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Woods, 41, served as Hershey’s head coach last season and guided the Bears to a Calder Cup championship in six games against the Manitoba Moose. He was an assistant coach with the Bears and helped current Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau lead the Bears to a Calder Cup title in 2006. Woods was appointed head coach of the Bears when Boudreau was hired by the Capitals on Nov. 22, 2007.

Capitals Sign Gustafsson

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed center Anton Gustafsson, their first-round choice, 21st overall, in the 2008 Entry Draft, to a three-year entry-level contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Gustafsson, 19, is a 6’2”, 194-pound native of Karlskoga, Sweden, who spent most of this season with Bofors IK of Sweden’s HockeyAllsvenskan league, recording 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 25 games. He also played for his junior team, Frolunda, and recorded seven points (three goals, four assists) in five playoff games.

Gustafsson’s father, Bengt, played 629 games for Washington from 1979-89, recording 555 points (169 goals, 359 assists). He ranks fifth all-time in Capitals points and goals and sixth in assists.

Capitals Recall Pothier & Varlamov

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Brian Pothier and goaltender Simeon Varlamov from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) and assigned goaltender Michal Neuvirth to Hershey, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Pothier, 31, is a third-year Capital who suffered a concussion Jan. 3, 2008, at Boston and missed the remainder of the season and has not played in the NHL this season. He recently completed a four-game conditioning stint with the Bears and is available to make his season debut with the Capitals tomorrow night in Atlanta, the same city where he made his NHL debut nearly eight years ago (April 3, 2001, as a Thrasher).

Washington Recalls Bourque & Send Varlamov To Hershey

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled forward Chris Bourque from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) and assigned goaltender Simeon Varlamov to Hershey, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Bourque, 22, has played in 27 games for Hershey this year. He has eight goals, is second on the team with 20 assists and has a +8 rating. Bourque tallied a goal and an assist last night in Hershey’s 5-3 win against Albany.

Capitals Recall Oskar Osala

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled forward Oskar Osala from the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Hershey Bears and reassigned Keith Aucoin and Bryan Helmer to Hershey, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Osala (OH-sah-lah), 20, is a first-year pro who stands 6’4”, 225 pounds. He has played in 26 games for Hershey this year and is second on the team and third in the league (first among rookies) with 16 goals. His 22 points rank sixth on the team and he shares the AHL lead at +17.
